We were at B&N with our niece and nephews last week. I saw that they had a beautiful collector's edition of The Secret Garden. My 9 turning 10 year old niece loves to read so I think I'm going to buy her that as part of her birthday gift. It has one of those fabric page holders, it's hardcovered and the pages are edged in a silver color. It's beautiful!

@locavore_mama: L, W, and W is a 6-12 year old level, and I think Harry Potter is right around 5th grade level (which is about 10 years old). And I am pretty sure Nancy Drew is also age-appropriate.

Do you think it would be weird to get her used copies for birthdays and Christmases? New is so expensive and I think pointless unless it's a beautiful single collectors edition like The Secret Garden ^.

I got my niece the Chronicles of Narnia when she was 9 and it was age appropriate for her.
The complete set of Laura Ingalls Wilder is an awesome idea, I wish I had the whole set. -

I loved The Wizard of Oz as a kid. I know they have some beautiful editions of it

I would just get "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" and write a little note on the inside. More sentimental value than practicality of reading.
