So I think I understand the winter coats and carseats issue, but is it okay for LO to wear a non-puffy (i.e. down) coat in the carseat? Is the issue that the down would compress in an accident and the straps would become too loose? I imagine that wouldn't happen with a non-down coat, like something with wool or cotton that isn't puffy, but is that bad too? Thanks!

There are some thinner down coats that are okay. I think you can find a list from The Car seat Lady. In theory, other materials would be fine. However, I think you would just need to pay attention to how it all fits in the seat, and take it on a case-by-case basis. LO has a few coats that are wool/cotton but that are cut so that it still impedes correct strap tightness (think of a pea coat bunching up when you sit).
ETA: LO wears fleece most of the time when we're in and out of the car. If we're driving somewhere to be outside for a while, we wait until arriving to put a thicker coat on her.
