Yes, you’ll see tonal kitchens, but there’s just as many out there with cabinets and floors that are on opposite light/ dark spectrums. Personally, I like those best. To me it’s not enough to go a shade or two in either direction. For this kitchen either go with a white floor or dark floor. Since the same flooring will be used throughout the house then for sure a dark floor. I don’t have a picture, but my aunt recently stained her floors dark and her kitchen and old floors were very matchy to the kitchen cabinet’s honey color. The before looked nice and the after really makes everything stand out more for some reason.

@Anagram: definitely darker than what you posted. If your MIL is into gray then I’d opt for more of a slate that has consistent coloring, less wood tone variation like the floor you picked- really nice, but not right for that kitchen IMO.

I just saw this pic on insta that reminded me of your post—- this light wood looks gorgeous w white floors/walls. It’s a bathroom not a kitchen but I’m not a design person lol

@Anagram: does she have pets? If so, I’d be wary of very dark floors because the pet hair shows up like crazy on dark floors. We had beautiful dark wood floors in our condo and a black and white dog and even right after sweeping/ vacuuming/ mopping I would see the light fur on the floor.

I would call it a medium oak. It has a dark grain in it that ties in the black from the countertops..

I'd go with the very dark floor posted above. I have a design motto called "match or clash" - meaning, I don't like if anything is like slightly similar but sort of off - I want it to fully match or fully clash.
