I live in a home built in the last 30-40 years so not new construction but not very old (at least in my book). We need to replace the doorknobs and hinges on our doors. We have neutral color paint on the walls. What color hardware would you choose?
Also would appreciate any recommendations on places to buy hardware other than Home Depot - not moving their selection!

I really think it depends on the house and your personal style.
We have a home built in the 50s and I would say we have a modern country kitchen style. We have brushed nickel Satin finish on all new hardware we replaced.

My preference in general is brushed nickel, but I think the dark antique bronze looks nice too. Shiny metal would show too many fingerprints I think.

We replaced all of ours with oil rubbed bronze hardware and I love it. It looks so elegant to me.

DH replaced all our door knobs and hinges with new one when we moved into our home. We chose brushed nickel.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Right now the results are mostly split between brushed nickle and brushed bronze which I find hilarious because those are the two I am struggling between and just...can't...seem...to...decide! I realize this is a prime example of a first world problem...and yet...it's bugging the heck out of me! I am not great at decorating but would say my favorites are a mix of Restoration Hardware and anything Joanna Gaines does on Fixer Upper. What style would that even be called? If it helps, our first floor has brushed nickle curtain rods. Would it even look okay to have brushed bronze hardware on our doors if we have brushed nickle curtain rods? In my fantasy world, I would just hire someone to do all this in a heartbeat.

ooooh if the curtain rods are brushed nickel, I would stick with that. I don't mind mixed metals when it comes to jewelry but in homes, I like uniformity!

I feel like the curtain rods are easily changeable but not so for the knobs and hinges. I'd go for the color knob/hinge you really love and deal with matching later. Maybe install a knob in each color on a door and live with it for a week? Ultimately it's a expensive update to your home so you want to get it right!. Heck you can spray paint your existing curtain rods ORB if you need to.. I've spray painted lots of things ORB.

@serenity207: in this case, knowing your style, I would choose the oil rubbed bronze look. Even with the brushed nickel curtain rods! Our house was remodeled with a vintage/old beams/"weathered" look, and we have the oil rubbed bronze hardware on all the doors and handles. We really love the dimension and character it gives the white doors!
