So my 2 1/2 year old is wearing 5T pajamas and overalls right now (can go smaller with shirts, pants have to have elastic or drawstring for his tall skinny butt)
What comes next, I'm confused trying to buy stuff online

Kid sizes usually come next. 6, 6X and so on. Different stores have different sizing, but my daughter went from 5T into 6s.

@Mrs. Carrot: thank you!
@Raspberry: yeah, he's 2y8m almost, so a little over 2 1/2. But he's like 40 1/2"-40 3/4". I'm trying to make clothes last a little longer, but I feel like it's moot the way he's been eating lately another growth spurt might be in the works.

I see lots of 4 and 5x stuff in girls clothing (I would know my mil keeps buying all of it and I have to exchange cause it's huge!) That seems to coincide with kids xs, not sure if it's the same in boys clothes though

@MamaBear87: I'm not ready for boy sizes and I don't think the clothes are as cute after T sizes my baby is growing up too fast

This so depends on brands. In some stores we moved to a kids XS, kids small, kids 5 or kids 6. I had to check the size charts for each store.
My DD has been in this weird in between place for the past six months, half in toddler sizes and half in kids sizes. She desperately needs the height of kids sizes (especially for shirts, she has a long torso) but they are generally too wide.
And for some reason we always had to move up in pajamas before anything else.

@Sams Mom: Not exactly what you asked, but what brand are you buying? My son is 36 lbs and 42 inches and we fit solidly in a 4T. He hasn't worn Carters in years though, so maybe that's the difference. I'm wondering if your issue is more brand than sizing. Once you get into the bigger clothes you run into issues such as zip fly, buttons, etc, which are a nightmare when you potty train.

@LBee: I buy a lot of cat & Jack and osh kosh.
The single pieces aren't too bad honestly, he can still wear a 4T in shirts, 5T looks a little big on him. Pants we're in 4T with the straps cinched down. But pajamas are all basically 5T. I want to get him some good lined overalls and snow pants that will last more than one season.

@Sams Mom: So the issue is pajamas? I would recommend Baby Gap (the outlet is great) or H&M. If you want to go quality - size 100 at Hanna Andersson fits with room to grow and have lasted 2 years.
I thought you were saying that he was already out of 5T so I was super confused since my son definitely isn't and he's bigger than your DS. I will say my son has similar stats at that age and has really slowed down in growth. I obviously didn't read your post really well - sorry!
I find Carters / Osh Kosh sizing to be ridiculous. My 13 month old can fit in 3T pajamas there.
Example of snow pants:

ETA: I find that if you want pieces that will last a long time that investing in stuff like HA really pays off. Again, not what you asked, just my experience with a similarly large child.

I just got primary pajamas after a similar post, and I found the shirts run slim but long and the pants run comfortably in the waist and nice and long. They aren’t super slim in the waist though, I sized up and I think pants wise I could have gone with the smaller size while shirts fit fine and almost a little tight!
ETA Sorry @ wrong person!

For boys I would say Children's Place and Gymboree tend to run big, so check those out (not true for their girls' clothes though). And yes after 5T, it's kid sizes which are most definitely less cute.

@Sams Mom: I have no advice but, man, your little guy must be all legs! My daughter is almost as tall as your son but we're still solidly in 4T.

@skinnycow: he's all legs, but so am I 🤦♀️ will I'm long in the torso too now, but as a kid I was gangly all legs
pear / 1728 posts
@Sams Mom: I'm the same way - my legs are as long as my husband's and he's 6'3" (I'm 5'8"). Thankfully my daughter seems to not have inherited super long legs!

my biggest problem is the 1 piece body suits, since he is lanky. He still wants footie jammies sometimes, and overalls end up riding up his crotch, and the straps only lengthen so far. I'm just tired of buying stuff that doesn't seem to fit for more than 6 months if I'm doing good.

Size 4 boys is pretty comparable to 5t although the boy sizing seems to be cut leaner and longer.
My tall and lanky 5 year old wears size 6 (S) in Carters, Old Navy, and Gymboree, but wears XS (4-5) in Cat and Jack and Gap.
My almost 2.5 year old is tall and muscular and has a big belly. He is just moving into 4t for everything. He can wear some small 5t shirts.
I tend to always size up in Jammies!

I’m just chiming in to say the next size up is so confusing. My 5 year old is a little on the short side and pretty even height and width wise, and 6/6x is fitting with room to spare. But my friend with a tall and skinny son is at a loss. And forget when things are small/medium/ large. Too confusing.

Agree that kids 4 is similar to 5T. My son wears a 4 or a 5T. XS tends to be a 4/5, so is a little big for my son.

Agree with trying other brands. My 4yo DD is about 41" and fits well in Hanna size 100 and Tea size 4 or 5 (he might want 5 for the pant length). Have you tried Primary? Their leggings at least seem to fit more like Hanna/Tea for length (recognize you'd probably want non-leggings for you DS). They have nice pajamas, too, though we ultimately prefer Hanna. Both HA and Tea are a bit on the pricier side, but we exclusively buy during sales and tend to stock up at end-of-season sale. They're easily comparable or cheaper than Target at that time. HA sells on Zulily from time to time too, though often not as cheap as their good sales on their own website.

@Sams Mom: re: footie PJs, Carter's makes non-toddler sizes 4 and 5 (not 4T and 5T) which are respectively an inch or two longer than 4T and 5T. This works well for my skinny kids....although I'm surprised to hear you say that these sizes aren't working on a 40 inch tall child - this is the height of my 4.5 year old, and she wears size 4 or 4T Carter's footies without issue. Could your PJs perhaps have shrunk in the dryer?! I don't mean that in a critical way at all! My girls are long legged and very skinny, which has meant that I need to air dry their leggings, no matter what brand!
grapefruit / 4492 posts
@PinkElephant: I do dry everything he wears because I have to air-dry my bras, jeans, half my shirts, that I just dry everything.
