@stargal: Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, and a few other brands are all under one big company. I can't remember the name of it, but knew that years and years ago when I was a Gap store employee.

@.twist.: That's sad. Target has worked hard over the years to develop the brand cache that it has. Sounds like some Target head honchos need to get to Canada and work on its image.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@cascademom: Target JUST came to Canada this spring, so the honcho's have done their stuff. We can't have the same brands as the US or the same prices because of marketing. They need to keep to what the market is. So they brought in "some" of the brands but not all and "some" of the prices but ultimately they need to keep to the Canada market pricing. It's really quite sad and so many people are disappointed.

@highwire: Chipotle is so delicious!! haha
I also love Five Guys. I'll have to say In n' Out is so overrated to me!! And I grew up in CA!

@wahine08: that reminds me! Chipotle and Moes. I much prefer Salsaritas.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
I definitely agree with PB and Apple! Also, Sea World.
Starbucks I wouldn't consider overrated. They're everywhere, but I wouldn't say they are known for being the BEST coffee, just yummy and convenient.
Other companies I think are overrated:
Maclaren (strollers)- good but I don't know if they're THAT much better than the other, much cheaper umbrella strollers...
Five Guys, as someone else said. Their fries are nasty and although the rest of the food is good, it's not anything amazing to me..
Some people way overplay the Trader Joe's hype. While TJ's is great, posting fb pics of what you bought because you don't have one where you live is way overkill for essentially groceries and junk food, imo.
Manolo Blahnik
Nordstrom (well most of it!)
I know there's more but I can't think of them!
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
@wahine08: I prefer in-n-out to five guys tastewise, but I think they're BOTH overrated! Haha.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
@highwire: I was gonna say Disneyland too but I think it depends on the day you go. If you get a good deal at certain times and go during the off peak seasons it can be fun in combo w/ California adventure. But I would never get those season passes!

@googly-eyes: Five Guys' fries are my favorite!
I agree with Nordstrom. I can find the same stuff for less expensive basically EVERYWHERE else!

@stargal: I agree on Apple and Pottery Barn. I love me a Starbucks Iced Caramel Mocha, though.
Five Guys - I prefer a local place that has burgers at half the price AND you can get delicious milkshakes.
@regberadaisy: oh man, I don't think anything will ever top Chipotle for me. Their chips may be sub-par but their burritos? Amaaaazing. (and yes, we have had this discussion before...HA!)
coconut / 8472 posts
@mediagirl: The no milkshakes thing is my biggest beef with 5 Guys.

Gap! LO has some Gap items but they are from a consignment shop, there is no way I would walk in there and buy something unless it was a couple bucks on the clearance rack. I think you are just paying for the name.

i agree with apple and pottery barn! i think anthropologie and gap are overrated too. i love starbucks though i'm disappointed that they've started charging for their soymilk even as a gold card holder. i especially love their soy lattes and peppermint mocha fraps - nobody else's soymilk is as good. their breakfast wraps are really good too!
chipotle could never be overrated to me. i also love me some in-n-out!
pomegranate / 3204 posts
I agree with some that pp's have mentioned: gap, in and out, pottery barn!
pomegranate / 3890 posts
@googly-eyes: yea trader joes sis so overrated. Half their stuff isn't that healthy!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@highwire: Totally agree with you about Chipotle! I don't get it.

I'm not an Ikea fan. There are some great deals but I don't love the cheap plastic/fabrics/chipboard and it's generally not my style at all.
I love my Apple products - I work in design and rely on them. If I didn't do design work though, I don't see why you would need one. I've never really cared about phones/music players, etc. so the fact that they sync easily is just a bonus for my lazy butt.
pomelo / 5258 posts
@wahine08: totally agree with In-n-Out being overrated. I hate when people come in from out of town and ask to eat there.
bananas / 9357 posts
I love Chipotle and in-n-out! But in-n-out is probably a bit overrated, but I still like it.
I can't think of anything to add to what's already been mentioned here.

OMG this thread is killing me! lol! I love my starbucks earl grey tea latte, I love my iPad, DD LOVES her PBK Anywhere Chair! hahahaha!! I don't shop at Lulu, Gap, Anthro etc because I'm +size and they don't come in sizes over 12 so I'll go ahead and call all those places over rated. Maybe Krispy Kream? I just don't get it, those doughnuts aren't that delicous IMO.
papaya / 10473 posts
@prettylizy: eww I hate Krispy Kreme too! I go for a local doughnut shop all the way... And DH and I pay a grand total of $2.45 for our breakfast there
bananas / 9357 posts
@prettylizy: earl grey tea latte, what is that? Tea mixed with coffee? Sounds good. I also am not a fan of Krispy Kreme!
bananas / 9973 posts
Man! I'm totally loyal to most of these brands y'all don't like! ;P
But DH and FIL are so anti-Apple and always bashing on my Apple stuff. DH also hates my Mercedes and that I want a Range Rover. lol. Always telling me negatives about maintenance, how they lock you in, etc...
I think Gap (Adults), BR, and Old Navy are overrated. I don't EVER think Old Navy is cheaper than Gap btw. The prices seem really high for the quality.
BTW - I still have every.single.piece of Lululemon I've purchased. Not a single tear, or flaw. Even my 10 year old pants still look great! Cost per wear is awesome!
@rachiecakes: IKEA! Ugh! I see all these great hacks and everything we assemble ourselves never line up right it seems. It's just okay...
I hate to say it, but I think a lot of ETSY stuff is overrated and overpriced. I get supporting small independents, but so much of it is so home-made and ridiculously priced.
pomelo / 5000 posts
I always like to the firs few bites of Five Guys, then the burger starts to fall apart and it's a gross, greasy mess.
I used to not like Starbucks, but I do like their Blonde roast. It's light and tasty. I also like their breakfast sandwiches when in a pinch for something on the go.
We recently got a Trader Joe's and everyone was so excited. People used to travel an hour or so away to shop at one. I just don't get it.
pineapple / 12526 posts
@shopaholic: I actually generally agree on etsy.
I agree with Gap, PB, Starbucks, Apple, Anthro, etc. I think a lot of them are way overpriced for what youre getting. Especially Gap. The clothing is really bland to me. I have an iMac and I like it. Do I think they should be as expensive as they are? Nope.
I especially agree with VS. When I started working there in 07, the quality was great and totally worth it. Now the bras are crappy quality, badly sized and the prices just keep rising. The fabrics and materials are so far below what they used to be, its nuts. Thats not even just the bras, its everything.
blogger / pomelo / 5400 posts
@shopaholic: I agree with you on Etsy! The last couple of prints I've gotten on there have looked like they just rolled off someone's inkjet. It's like everyone with a computer and a printer thinks they can be a designer. Ugh.
Agree on a lot of others, like Gap, VS, and Starbucks. And Disney!!!
I will defend IKEA to the death, though. But I think you have to buy the right things there, too, with realistic expectations of what you're getting.
cherry / 211 posts
J. Crew is so overpriced to me. Gap/ON etc are overpriced if ou pay full price, but I don't think I've ever gotten anything full price there yet.
I also think TOMS are way overrated/overpriced, and I own a pair.
coconut / 8279 posts
@Mrs. Yoyo: there are definitely things at Ikea that I can appreciate, some designs are really cool! but I would never buy things like bedding there because it's cheaply made and feels like sleeping on a Brillo pad, but the patterns are really stylish, so maybe I would, for like, a guest room that's rarely used, haha
blogger / pomelo / 5400 posts
@rachiecakes: yup, my favorites are things like shelving and storage units. Especially for kids!
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
I'm not sure overrated, but I think Anthropologie, Pottery Barn (I shop there a lot), Restoration Hardware are all over priced.
grapefruit / 4770 posts
@lawbee11: Because it makes your butt look ahmazing? Honestly, I don't wear them to make my butt look good, I love love love the quality! Unfortunately, whenever I wear them I have to make sure my husband isn't around, or I'll be late to my yoga class
Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Starbucks, Dunkin, McDonald's, Burger King, any of those fast food places. Man, I could go on and on lol. I think people just like what they like, and dislike what they dislike lol
