@mrbee: For #8 there's plenty of examples of subliminal advertising in media so I guess maybe #8 is about the extent to which someone believes it's used in media. I guess I don't understand how that one's a conspiracy theory since there's plenty of visual evidence. Unless you believe that all the visual evidence is planted, but that seems more complex than the conspiracy theory itself.
For JFK assassination there's some information that was 'lost' or still sealed and some holes in the story, plus medical examiners who said there had to have been a second shooter. So I guess it's how much you trust the government to tell you the truth. Is there a scientific test for trusting our government? If history teaches us anything it's that they're not always trustworthy, which is why I think it's more scientific to have some skepticism, especially of big groups interested in money and power.

#1 - Nah.
#2 - It's possible, but I'm not especially interested.
#3 - Possible but unlikely.
#4 - Why? What do they gain from that?
#5 - I do believe that the story we have is probably missing pieces. I don't think it was flat out planned though.
#6 - I believe that the build up of environmental toxins likely play a role in autism and vaccines with ingredients like aluminum, mercury, and formaldehyde could potentially be a contributing factor. I don't think they are the sole cause of autism by any means.
#7 - It's possible. I don't really care though...
#8 - Hasn't this been talked about by advertisers openly? I don't think there are some sort of secret evil messages, but I do think subliminal messaging is used to sell products, sure! I'm pretty sure this is taught in classes!
#9 - Disappear? No.
#10 - Eh... depends on your definition. But to an extent, yes.

I gotta say that I learn something new almost every single day that I'm on Hellobee. I never knew there were people who didn't believe in dinosaurs!!! The only conspiracy theory I knew about dinosaurs was regarding the way they were killed off. I just Googled it. Who knew?
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@mrsjazz: I've read about a number of biblical literalists that believe the world is ~6k years old, and that dinosaur bones are a test of faith by the powers that be (or a hoax). It's a fairly common belief, although I think it's become less widely held over time!
coconut / 8305 posts
@mrbee: I believe the world is around that old, but believe the dinos are real...... Say whaaaa?! O_o
honeydew / 7589 posts
@runsyellowlites @mrbee: Most Christians I know believe that the world is 6k years old but that dinosaurs did exist but were all killed in the flood. I didn't know people believed they didn't exist at all! Learn something new everyday...
coconut / 8305 posts
@Arden: ^ That would be the ticket right there! I've talked to a handful that didn't think they were real, but not too many.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@mrbee: @runsyellowlites: You know it's actually kind of dumb. For the longest time I thought my whole religion didn't believe in them and when I found out differently I still didn't start believing.
honeydew / 7589 posts
@runsyellowlites: Isn't there something in the Bible that alludes to the idea of dinosaurs? I want to say its in Job...

Not a single one. Not even a little bit. Though, that said, people do disappear alot around that pesky triangle... lol

-5, we don't know the whole story.
-6, I do believe there is something going on with the sheer number of vaccines our kids are supposed to get these days, and how soon/ often. I do believe the MMR isn't safe for small bodies simply because it's 3 live strains at once, and I won't give it to my daughter until she's 3, or later if I can get away with it. (She is up to date on the rest, although we did them at a slower pace and no flu shots). The Federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) has awarded multi-million dollar settlements to two children named Ryan Mojabi and Emily Moller. The courts agreed the vaccines had caused encephalopathy, which in turn produced permanent injury, including symptoms of autism and ultimately an ASD diagnosis. Sadly, many many more petitions like these two exist, and thousands of parents swear up and down, and believe to their core the MMR affected their child/ren in this way. Anecdotal, or only 2 children affected, I'm not risking my kid.
-8 is probably also true.

Good gravy. I don't believe any of these for a second. Maybe in my most crazy conspiracy fueled moments I might like to pretend that there is some illuminati that has something to do with the Catholic Church and the Masons... but I realize there is too much entropy in the world for that really to happen.
I can't believe that "Truther" theories and "birther" theories didn't make the list. They are as ridiculous as the rest of them!

Believe-ish:
2. (JFK) Maybe? Who knows if well ever know the whole story. I don't think the gov't killed him though.
6. (Vaccines and Autism) Maybe? I tend more to believe their could be links between drugs during labor. Specifically pit. Or maybe I just watched TBOBB too much.
7. (UFO) Maybe?!
8. (TV) This is pretty much proven. But I don't think it's to the extent of brainwashing by the gov't and things like that.
9. (Bermuda Triangle) I believe there could be something scientifically weird there. Like magnetic fields, etc.
On the fence:
3. (WOMD in Iraq)
Def. do not believe:
4. (Global Warming is hoax) How can something that's scientifically proven be a hoax, and why would the gov't make it one? I think GW comes from too much factory farming. IMO.
5. (9/11) Curious as to how ppl think the gov't was involved exactly? Can someone explain their views? AFM I don't think the gov't like, planned it or anything. WHY would that be? It's kinda crazy. I know the gov'ts not perfect or anything, but that just seems unthinkable to me. Maybe it's my background growing up around the military/gov't.
Also, did you know that there's a theory that the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax? Craziness.....

I absolutely believe #2. I'm kind of obsessed with it actually. I'm on the fence about #1, #7, and #9.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@anonysquire: my DH doesn't believe in Dino's either! He has no clue why but I think it stems from the fact that he doesn't believe in evolution..at ALL! That's another story though!
I think the govt knew ahead of time or at least had their hands in 9/11, I think global warming is probably exaggerated a bit, for sure on the tv subliminal messaging and I hope there was a UFO.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
I don't reeeeeeeeally believe any. I mean, I believe global warming and subliminal advertising exist but never thought about them as conspiracies. I'm also suspicious about the intentions of the war in Iraq (WOMD). I also deleted several friends in April that were posting conspiracy theories about the Boston bombings, saying the government did it. Give me a break.
@TheSwissWifeStyle: ugh I saw the sandy hook one too
grapefruit / 4817 posts
I think there's some truth to a few of these, but for the most part, I don't buy into them. In regards to #5, though, I fully believe that our military took down Flight 93.
pomelo / 5820 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: I agree with you!
I don't buy into any of them. I hate whenever a major tragedy happens and you hear people proclaiming how it's a set up or it didn't really happen... I think it's disrespectful to the victims and families (I'm specifically thinking of the Newtown shootings and the Boston bombings).
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@anonysquire: Yah, I've read the bible a few times... I don't think it explicitly says how old the earth is? From what I understand, people have calculated the implied age of the earth using the various generations and genealogies in Genesis...
I've also reviewed a bunch of the geological evidence that the Earth is billions of years old... and netted out on the billion side of things.

@Maysprout: I would love to hear more about 10! Is it like The Avengers?
I think the only one I believe is #5 and possibly #9 bc like @Turtledoves: I wouldn't want to risk it either!
pomelo / 5257 posts
@Mrs Hedgehog: Lol, I was going to say the same as you. I don't really believe any of them, but I have to admit I would probably prefer to avoid the Bermuda Triangle...just in case.
I also have to admit that I'm surprised how many people believe there is some sort of conspiracy around 9/11. Honestly, that depresses me a bit, having been within a mile of the Pentagon when it happened, knowing people who were killed in the Pentagon, and having a friend whose dad was a pilot and was on the plane that went down in Shanksville. 9/11 is very close to home for me. I don't believe for a second the government was involved and the very idea of it is upsetting and difficult to understand. What would be the motive?
eggplant / 11716 posts
I don't believe in any of these--I've read extensively about 4-5 of these, and the more I read, the less believable the conspiracy theories are.
persimmon / 1180 posts
@MrsSCB: I completely agree with you about 9/11. It makes me sad to see so many people think our government was involved.
I'm really surprised that the Holocaust wasn't on that list. I absolutely believe it happened, but I know there are a lot of revsionists out there.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@MrsSCB: I agree! What I don't get is how the government can be considered "incompetent" most of the time, but then when it comes to conspiracy theories... they are suddenly capable of being James Bond. But that's a general concern of mine, not one specific to the conspiracies listed above.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@mrbee: Agreed. It's like, "The government never accomplishes anything! Except that time that they managed to organize one of the most deadly terrorist attacks in American history in multiple cities at once, planting evidence to blame other people and destroying any evidence of the government's role in it." I mean...whaaaa?
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
The only one I think is not entirely true in its details is the assissination of JFK by a lone gunman. Given the direction of the bullets, it doesn't seem possible.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
This is seriously fascinating!
I agree that it's sad to hear how many believe that 9/11 was a conspiracy. Popular Science actually debunked the theories documentaries and such have put forth. @Mrs. Jacks: Isn't that what "truthers" believe, so technically it made the list?
#3 was confusing. If you read the link, it seems like the conspiracy theory is that there WEREN'T WMDs and Bush was deceiving the country? I believe that to some extent. But there are always many motives for war.
I don't think we have the whole story of JFK's assassination. And I wouldn't go to the Bermuda Triangle! That's about it for me.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@TheSwissWifeStyle: @Mrs Hedgehog: I have a background in Marine Biology and we learned that a lot of what happens in the Bermuda Triangle has to do with the trade winds coming together causing violent storms and the strength of the Gulf Stream's current. I've been snorkeling in the Bermuda Triangle and came out alive
I don't believe in any of these theories!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
I don't believe in any of them, but I guess in reality nothing surprises me anymore so they very well could be true. I do believe in dinosaurs though
pomelo / 5000 posts
Strongly (and sadly) believe in #3. The documentary "Why We Fight" shaped this already existing belief for me.
#10 and #7 make for good movies.
#4 and #6--I believe global warming is real and that vaccines are important, so it's hard for me to understand how they are viewed as conspiracies.
The dinosaur topic is interesting. I'm a Christian who believes in evolution and dinosaurs and that the world is billions of years old.
grapefruit / 4066 posts
@MrsSCB: i totally agree with you about 9/11
I don't really believe any of these theories to be honest!
nectarine / 2600 posts
@Pepper: Yeah I totally agree. Think of how those families must feel!
@mrbee: I might have missed this somewhere along the line, but what kind of science are you in. I've always been fascinated by science but didn't have the math smarts to pursue it.
@MrsSCB: fabulous points. I'm sorry you were so personally affected by 9/11.
@anbanan15: Cool! Glad you came out unscathed
