    @Pepper: @MrsSCB: Agreed!

I don't believe any of these but the last one makes me chuckle because of the mention of the PENTAVIRATE in So I Married an Axe Murderer.

THANK YOU for giving me the opportunity to watch this clip and put myself in a good mood for today!!

No, I don't believe in any of them as conspiracy theories, especially if they involve large-scale government coverup. It does make me nervous how many people can be swayed by movies (I mean, "documentaries") against scientific evidence and common sense.

Re: Assassination of John F. Kennedy was part of a broader conspiracy, I do think it was part of a broader "conspiracy" (don't think that would be the right word for it). I don't think it's a coincidence that JKF, MLK Jr. and RFK were all assassinated within a short period of time, but it's not connected to the government. It's a result of racist, backwards-thinking mf'ers who fought civil rights expansion with violence.

Re: Subliminal Advertising is woven into television, I guess it depends on what you count as subliminal. There's are tons of messages woven into advertising to hook consumers; that's effective marketing!

@TheSwissWifeStyle: Thank you, I appreciate it. I do also feel lucky because my MIL was in the Pentagon at the time (she worked there) but was totally fine, thank goodness.

nope, not a conspiracy theorist. I will read a little about them, but rarely believe it.

@MrsSCB: totally agree...it makes me sad to think that our gov't could purposefully be involved.

@looch: have you read 11/22/63 by stephen king? not scientific by any means, but interesting to read in more detail about that event (although who knows what he researched vs. what he made up...).

@boiledpnut: I have also heard that people don't believe the holocaust happened...that's an insane level of denial IMO.

I don't really believe in any of these, except #8...because it would seem to make sense!

This is a really fascinating thread!

I don't believe in conspiracies, religious history, or supernatural things so it is interesting to see what other believe.

The list made me think of the "Teach the Controversy" t-shirts. I hope I don't offend anyone, but I think the shirts are really funny. http://controversy.wearscience.com/

@Arden: That would be correct, along with the premise they & man were created together
@mrbee: Yep, around 6k... It's been quite awhile but I read an article discussing the assumptions in our current carbon-dating "age" & how the change of them (can't remember exactly off the top of my head) would actually cause the age to coincide much closer to the 6k theory!
@luckypenny: I understand that school of thought, I'm talking about if one had never been exposed to having alcohol in the first place.

  9. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@runsyellowlites: I was also confused about the alcohol metaphor... If someone has never even tasted alcohol, of course they're not an alcoholic. I wasn't aware there was any other school of thought on that.

@TemperanceBrennan: some of those shirts totally go over my head! lol But the pyramid/aliens ones definitely makes me think of the show, Ancient Aliens! DH and I love that show! haha. They can make a really convincing argument sometimes

And the one w/ the merman guy....is that supposed to be Atlantis? I wish mermaids were real and that I was one! :oD Mermaids are aweome!

@MrsSCB: That was my point about vaccines & autism... While there are those that present from birth tendencies (just as those with addictive tendencies do) the exposure to the environmental factor is what brings the condition out, and for some/many had they never had the exposure they would've never fit the premise of the condition.

  14. TemperanceBrennan

    pear / 1998 posts

@TheSwissWifeStyle: Yep, that's Atlantis. If you hold your cursor over the picture, it will tell you what it is referencing. When I was little I was obsessed with Splash and really thought that "Mermaid" was a practical career path for me!

I think JFK's assassination was part and parcel of a larger series of events . . . not necessarily a *conspiracy* though.

@MrBee: Have you read the Warren Report? I haven't read it in it's entirety, but the *theory* of one shooter, three bullets just don't make factual sense. It's an excellent example of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole (I actually think that's why it's so long). Magic bullet my ass!

@TheSwissWifeStyle: Ah sorry, I meant that I was trained as a scientist... I don't work as a scientist now!

I almost majored in evolutionary biology, but my interest was more in the evolution side of things... especially on the computer science side of things. Genetic algorithms, the emergence of complexity out of relatively simple interactions, geeky stuff like that.

Mostly though, I just meant that I use the scientific method every day...

Omgosh. Okay so im extremely scientific minded and open to any kind of theories so I have to admit, I can see any of these being true.

Anything that involves the government (jfk, wmd, 9/11) are all capable of being something that the media doesnt show/tell us. we only ever hear one side of the story and that is the US's side of it. We are influenced daily from TV, newspapers, internet about how bad the world is and how good we are. So for s*it to hit fan every once jn awhile, is probably going to happen. I hope and pray for the victims and citizens that the gov't wouldnt do such a thing but its possible.

As far as global warming goes. This is such a hoax. The Earth's climate has been fluctuating to extremes for millions and millions of years. We are actually due for an ice age at any time. (Regardless of what Al Gore tried so hard to tell us).

I am a believer that SOME vaccines do more harm than good. What conspiracy would this be? Well the pharmaceutical company make a cajillion dollars off medications and people will believe almost anything a doctor would tell them because it *may* affect their health. I am sure the governtment takes a portion of that money somewhere along the lines.

Ill stop there. Let me just finish by saying I am not 'right' or trying to sway anybody's own thoughts. This is just my own beliefs and not intending on offending anyone

  29. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

So something that confuses me a little about all this is that, IMO, in order for something to be a "conspiracy" there would have to be an agenda, a reason people would want us to believe something that's not true. Otherwise, why would they bother? And I just don't see what the agenda would be with a lot of these. Like global warming -- what would be the point of scientists, researchers, politicians, etc. all convincing us of climate change if it weren't true?

  30. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@MrsSCB: Funding. There's global warming, pay us to find a solution!

Government = Obedience. Scare society so they never betray us!

Just as examples. ETA: People are greedy, whether for money or power or other, they're greedy.

  31. Lindsay05

    pomegranate / 3759 posts

@MrsSCB: well I dont think it's ALL of those people you mention. I think people start to use it in their campaigns because the public now sees this as a problem so they will vote for the person who will 'stop' climate change. It may actually be a postive conspiracy to get people to reduce waste and consumption to improve air quality, etc. unfortunately it could also be a way for gov't to add to taxes like enviro taxes, and make large companies pay through the nose for new envirnmental policies. Like I said Im not 'right' but this is how conpiracy thoerists would think IMO.

  32. mrbee

    admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts

@Lindsay05: Totally agreed on historical weather changes. But, I also believe that humans have impacted the planet quite a bit!

  33. Maysprout

    grapefruit / 4800 posts

@regberadaisy: I've never seen the Avengers! I don't have any favorite group(s) though. I just think money gets stuff done, some big corporations have net profits larger than the gdp's of countries http://www.businessinsider.com/25-corporations-bigger-tan-countries-2011-6?op=1 and that money is being used in ways to control politics and who knows what else. Every political season I'm surprised at new 'front' groups that are used to influence politics - and all that takes a lot of $$ / organization / time than most private citizens have.

  34. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@.twist.: Ok but for the funding thing, it's not like scientists get paid money to "research global warming" and then use it to buy houses and BMWs or whatever. Like they are actually doing research. So I still don't see what the point would be to request money and then spend your time doing "phony" research.

  35. Lindsay05

    pomegranate / 3759 posts

@mrbee: I think there has been some impact but I dont think the impact is making a difference. Once an extreme system hits, the impact humans had will be insignificant.

Is it wrong to not really care whether or not you believe in certain things? When it comes to things like the supernatural, the state of the environment, the government, etc. I just get overwhelmed and kinda shut down! I have enough stress in my day to day life!! I'm not a big picture person... so when it's something that directly affects what's right in front of me (like vaccines and autism) I do get concerned and do my research. But anything bigger than what's right in front of my eyes and I go into "I don't really care" mode!!

This is why the environmental things get to me... I know I should care because it IS in my here and now, but I just can't handle it...!!

  38. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@MrsSCB: Maybe they're using it to researching other stuff? haha I'm totally with you on that. I don't believe in the "theories", this is just what I've heard/read.

@mrbee: i dont believe the earth is 6k and Im a Believer. Youre right, the bible does not say the age of the Earth. Im in the camp that Gods time is not our time and that he gave us brains for a reason and we discover things, like fossils and how to date things. Also: dinos are real.
