Do you have central air, window units, ceiling/fans or good ol mother nature?
We have central but for the most part we prefer using the ceiling fans and openings windows.

Central air. Used to have a swamp cooler as well until a storm blew it off along with the roof about 2 years ago!

We have central air, but I always try to keep it off as long as possible and leave the windows open! We also have ceiling fans in all of our rooms which helps sooooo much!

We have an HVAC unit - you'd be hard pressed to find a house here w/o it.
We also have a swamp cooler that we use for a couple months a year before it gets too hot, but when its too warm to use nothing. We usually use the swamp cooler from March - April and Oct -Nov-ish. That can change though. Once the temp gets too high or the humidity goes up into the high teens it doesn't work very well.

Our future place has ceiling fans and the option for window units. Yay for pre-war buildings! We actually like having the windows open as long as we can stand.

We have central air, but we rarely use it. We rely mostly on the open windows and ceiling fans/attic fan

We have central air. There are no ceiling fans in our rental house unfortunately.

We had central air in our last place, but it was a ground floor unit and stayed so cool that we only needed the AC on maybe half a dozen days out of the year.
Our new place has central air as well, and we haven't been there in the summer yet but I assume we will need it. I try to keep the windows open as long as possible, but there aren't screens in all the windows, so have to figure that out!

@CottonCandy: Its an Evaporative cooler - it icools air through the evaporation of water.

Central air, ceiling fans and mother nature. On those perfect days, all of our windows are open. On less than perfect days, we set the a/c.

@jennylayneaz: Oh wow, that sounds like a cool device to have! Are they popular in hot regions, like the south?? I have never heard of them before, but I am from the NE
nectarine / 2690 posts
@CottonCandy: They used to be pretty popular (I don't know about other places, just AZ!) but they really don't do well in the middle of summer. When its 120 out and you're adding water into the mix it just makes it humid and miserable! But, during the "too hot to do nothing, but not hot enough to want to pay a fortune to turn on the a/c" months, like right now, its so nice. Our house got down to 62 last night while we were sleeping! I love to sleep in the cold w/ tons of blankets
And they're much cheaper to run.

Mother Nature! We only have a few weeks worth of hot weather a year so we crank up the fans and open the windows during that time.

When it's nice enough outside we like to keep the windows open, but when the hot hot heat starts its Central air + ceiling fans + pedestal fans + cold beer!

We've got A/C but luckily haven't had to turn it on more than a couple times in the last several months. Yay for low electric bills. The weather here in central TX is being completely wackadoo... It was over 80 a couple days ago and today is COLD and rainy. Yeesh. I've just kept fans on because who knows what the weather will be like in an hour!

We have central air at our new place...now to see if it actually works this summer

We have Mitsubishi Mini Splits. They're in each room so each room can be individually heated/cooled with a remote. Love them.

@LMOG47: we are looking into getting mini splits (just met with the guy yesterday)! So you are happy with them for cooling? What about heating? We are looking for a "green" solution, and these were highly recommended..

@yoursilverlining: We've had them about a year & a half and absolutely love them! Our house is older (built in 30's) so having a ductless system was a big bonus. Like you said, they're also "green," use less energy and also lowered our electricity bill. It's also great since we can choose not to heat/cool rooms we aren't really using and have one room cooler/warmer than others depending on our preference. I'd definitely recommend them!

I can't imagine not having central air. We also have ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and office.

In the PNW getting a/c is only worth it about one week a year! And its hilarious to see people scrambling to buy small units during that one week...

Opening windows and sky lights. We are about 4 miles inland from the beach so we get a nice breeze in the afternoon. There's no need for A/C.

@LMOG47: Great, thanks for the info! We are looking for a ductless system as well. We were most interested in geothermal, but with the cost to instal ductwork, it was just too much $$$$. The mini splits sound like a great alternative that uses electricity vs. the fossil fuels we use now (and are trying to get away from!)

Central air but we keep fans on as well. I can't even sleep at night without a fan or two on! When it is a really nice day I turn the AC off and open the windows and doors though. I love fresh air in the house.
