We want to get BIL something good but all the pricier stuff(crib, carseat, furniture, stroller etc) has been snapped up by MIL, FIL and my FSIL's parents and grandparents.
What did you buy for your siblings when they had a baby?

Maid for a day while they are in the hospital so they come home to a super clean house? Or a laundry basket filled with all the things you wish you had, or splurge items that seem expensive but work really well.
I will say that my dad and sister came to our house while I was at the hospital and deep cleaned the entire place, it was awesome and I was so happy to come home to a sparkly clean house with my brand new baby.

For family, I would probably get the keepsake/sentimental items, if they're that type. A monogrammed silver set, gift certificate for newborn photos. Lots of family and friends will spoil with big items but the personal/sentimental items that I have from when I was a baby are pretty special to me now.

When my siblings had their first kids I was only 16/18 so I was broke and didn't really think to get them anything nice or big. I like @prettylizy idea of a maid for a day or @rachiecakes idea of a photographer for newborn photos, both GREAT ideas, I would have loved. Otherwise, some gift cards for food places around them where they can order carry out, which is just about every restaurant these days. You could make them a bunch of freezer meals if you wanted too. Is she going to breastfeed? A pump is a big expense and no one got one for me, I would have cried if someone got me one!

@prettylizy: @rachiecakes: @Bao: These are great ideas! I think a newborn shoot will be awesome!

@Bao: Her sister wasn't able to pump and only used hers 2 times so she doesn't need to buy one!
A few of my friends bought my pump off my registry and I was soooo happy!
I think I cried too!

My parents took care of everything so I made them a quilt, made them a diaper cake and gave them 2 extra boxes of diapers, a bunch of outfits and thats it so far. We still have a month til the nbaby is born.

@autumnlove: I definitely vote newborn shoot! I would cry if someone gave that to me, and I'm still hoping someone does...

Man I am going to have a hard time when SIL or BIL has a baby! I'm giving by nature and had gotten all excited about what things worked for us and what would be most useful ... until I realize they never got us anything! Well, SIL got LO a backpack, but BIL never even got us a card! His parents didn't get us anything aside from 3 outfits in total (given months apart), but MIL was nice enough to knit her a dress and a sweater.
So I dunno. Half of me wants to treat others how I'd like to be treated, but the other half of me says, "when in Rome ..." (They don't have baby showers here.) Bleh, I'll deal with it when the time comes =/

@Arden: aww! I thought you got a good deal on a shoot when you emailed a few and told them you were on a budget? Or was that for maternity pics?

my brother and sister got us our crib mattress and my SILs have gotten us a bunch of clothes, etc.

@autumnlove: love the photo shoot idea!! That would be amazing.
I threw my sisters shower (about $300+), gave her a carseat, and some outfits. I spent about $500 on her eeek!! I wasn't pg at the time and working, I could never do that now!
She had a baby when my shower came around so she didn't spend much on me.

I got my sister the pack and play. For my brother and SIL, my sisters and I chipped in together on the breast pump-- though come to think of it, she was only able to BF for a few weeks and ended up switching to formula.

About the newborn shoot thing, I'd be worried she already has someone in mind. Could you just say, this is what I'd like to give you but pick a photographer together?

@Foodnerd81: Yes, I was thinking about that too!

My siblings don't have kids yet, but when they do I will make them a quilt for each baby.

@autumnlove: For birth photography. Still working on affording a newborn shoot.

I love the idea of a newborn shoot, but I would cry if someone hired a maid for a cleaning, but like a month or two after LO was born. Heck, I'd cry if someone hired a maid for me now and LO is 7 months old.
