I've read that it's best if your newborn sleeps in your room with you in the beginning. I'm looking for a bassinet or something for that, but finding it hard to find one that seems safe. Many that I've seen have a lot of fabric and stuff on the inside. Pics or links appreciated!

Our bedroom is pretty big, so we just had LOs full size crib at the foot of our bed.

Ours went in her crib in her own room at 2 weeks old. We all slept better that way.
She spent the first 2 weeks in her bouncer chair next to our bed after she decided she hated the pack n play.

Bassinet in the PnP next to our bed. Then by 3-4 mo transitioned completely to the crib in her room (okay more like by 4.5 mo). Mostly prompted by her outgrowing the weight limit though!

We used a Nuna Sena in our room. The sides are all made of mesh and the bassinet part can be used up to 15 lbs. After that he was ready for his crib!

The first two nights home from the hospital DD slept in the bassinet that came with our stroller (Peg Perego Book PopUp.) After that we put her in her crib in the nursery and she sleeps well in there. She still naps in the stroller bassinet though.

DS slept in our room in a moses basket for the first 3 months or so. Pretty similar to this one but we didn't use the hood on it. It was great as it easily lifted off the stand so I would just take him in the basket to the lounge for feeds in the middle of the night.
Also when it came time to transitioning him to the crib in his own room we just put him in it, in the moses basket (without the stand) for a few nights so he got used to waking up with a different view. Worked really well!

Pack n play in our room for LO1. Crib in her room for LO2 and we take turns sleeping in a twin bed in there for whoever is on duty.

LO will have a hammock near our bed for an undetermined amount of time. If it's really messing with DH's sleep when he goes back to work, we'll move it into LO's room.

We used a moses basket like the one @snickers: posted. She slept in there until she was 8 weeks old.

We used a Kohlcraft bassinet, it was borrowed from some expat friends.

Our first baby slept in the Rock n Play next to our bed but I wouldn't recommend that due to the fact it gave him a flat spot on his head.
Our second either slept with us or in a Pack n Play.

Here in the UK it's recommended that babies sleep in the same room as their parents until at least 6 months of age. This helps parent and baby respond effectively to one another throughout the night and makes night-feeding much less strenuous. Our LO has slept in a crib pushed up against the side of our bed (with the side down) since he was born. Some newborns may prefer the confinement of a bassinet, as it makes them feel safe, but DS didn't seem to mind.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: We got a bassinet before my baby was born, but it was too low to the ground to get him in and out if it after my c-section. We then had a co-sleeper which was the same height as our bed. He moved into his room in a crib at 7 weeks. I'm glad we transitioned him to a crib before the end of the newborn stage, as it's served us well now that we're working on good sleep habits!

Rock and play in our room for the first 6 weeks, then we moved her to her own room and alternated between the RnP in there and the crib. I was in the look out for a flat spot, like @coopsmama: mentioned, but luckily we never had an issue.
I planned to have her in our room longer, but it just wasn't working for us. She slept better in her own room and we definitely slept better.

My husband built a co-sleeper. She was able to sleep in it until she was about 7 months old (and able to move and scoot around). It was against our bed on my side. After that, we used a pack n play with the top level thing. Both were great.

We used the bassinet on our Pack N Play, but I would have gotten a Moses basket on a rocking base if we had the space/money.

In his crib, in his room, and hes a great sleeper. Our room is right across the hall. Do what works best for you, don't listen to the "shoulds"!

Army's Reach Mini Co-Sleeper next to our bed. Bassinet style though, without the side dropped down.

Both kids slept in the PnP(not the bassinet part, just the regular area) at the foot of our bed, for the first 3-4 months.

We used a pack and play with a newborn napper and once the napper was outgrown, just the regular pack and play mattress but raised up. Shortly after moving to the pnp mattress, LO got restless at night so we made the move to the crib which helped dramatically.
ETA- the transition to the crib happened at 5 months. We intended to wait until 6 but LO wasn't comfortable in the pnp anymore.

Alternatively, you could always bunk with the baby...we had a futon in the nursery, I would go there after the middle of the night feeds so as not to wake my husband, who was a super light sleeper. My son was in the crib from 5 weeks of age.

@Ash: We borrowed the Moses basket from my SIL (just got a brand new mattress for it for us) but I am pretty sure most stores would sell them or be able to recommend a place to get them from, I have seen them in a lot of stores!
Here is our son after we put him in his room. This was checking on him one night and he was just lying there looking around!
