We are making dessert and bringing cranberry sauce...in cans...yes I'm lame.

I'm making my first Thanksgiving meal this year! I'm making the usual stars of the show, and then I'm going to roast brussel sprouts, butternut squash and make mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes.
Your cheddar biscuits sound tasty!
nectarine / 2705 posts
@tororojo: you're not lame at all. I actually prefer the canned cranberry

I'm hosting this year, so I'm making most of the food!
-turkey (brining it, too!)
-sweet potato/butternut squash casserole
-Brussels sprouts w/bacon and honey mustard
-crock pot stuffing
-cranberry/orange relish
-chocolate silk pie
-giblet gravy
Microwaving steamed bags of corn and heating up Pillsbury crescents!
MIL is making mashed potatoes and another dessert.

It's the three of us so we're making the turkey, stir fry green beans, mashed sweet /potatoe, crescent rolls and veggies cookies with the bird!
I might pick up a singular dessert for myself since my husband is not a sweets person.

We're doing the whole shebang! We're hosting my parents, my grandmother, my uncle's family (him and his wife and his two teenage daughters), and of course our little family.
Just finished the shopping last night (phew) and we're sticking to the classics:
18 lb turkey
giblet gravy
sour cream and chive mashed potatoes
mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows
creamed corn
sauteed green beans
stuffing
cornbread
cranberry sauce (from a can, one of me and WS's favorite foods)
apple pie
pumpkin paradise pie (layer of cheesecake on the bottom, pumpkin on top)

@mrs. wagon: Care to share your recipe for the cheesecake/pumpkin pie???
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@sweetooth: I keep meaning to try mashed cauliflower. Let me know how yours turn out!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@MrsBrewer: of course!! I got the recipe from a magazine years ago but lost the paper, but I think it's pretty close to this one, so I'm following this recipe:
It was a HUGE hit and I made it for these exact people years ago so I'm doing it again
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@MrsBrewer: oh ps. instead of getting the individual spices I just use pumpkin pie spice because it has all 3!

I don't cook, but for sure I will be bringing something. My husband wants to bring a dish he calls scalloped corn which makes me dry heave a bit. Cream corn, eggs and dorritos. Barf!
coconut / 8854 posts
@mrs. wagon: Thank you!!! I just saved this in my recipe box :-)!! Maybe I will have to bring over 2 pies! an apple and this one!!
Or I can just make a test one for DH and I

@anonysquire: doritos??? LOL sounds like my husband. If he wants something crunchy in a dish, so will ALWAYS just crumble doritos on it....
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@MrsBrewer: I think the recipe actually makes enough for 2 pies if you don't have a super deep pie pan (or use graham crusts like I'm going to do)!! so yeah, one test and one real
@anonysquire: aaaand I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Ohh cheddar biscuits sound yummy! I'm making cinnamon rolls with white frosting and pumpkin cinnamon rolls with maple frosting, and spinach + goat cheese frittata for Thanksgiving breakfast. I made a pumpkin cheesecake with chocolate graham crust and a pumpkin cheesecake with regular graham crust for Thanksgiving dessert. And I'm in charge of bringing 6 2litre bottles of pop

Green bean casserole (dairy, soy, & wheat free) and Sweet Potato pie... actually mini pies (vegan).
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@MrsBrewer: @mrs. wagon: Ya.... he always tells me about his favorite dishes his mom made them growing up and they all sound so nasty and incorporate doritos somehow. I call it poor mans food... He wants to bring it to my families Thanksgiving and I know none of my family will want it lol. Poor DH.

@regberadaisy: I've been making them for a while, over the past several months. They are actually pretty tasty! I do love mashed potatoes, but the healthy side of mashed cauliflower is winning these days. I use this recipe - and substitute cauliflower.

@anonysquire: omg his dish sounds...interesting.

I made three cheese balls last night
That's it! We are bringing in pre-made to my house this year if we are still waiting on baby's arrival at that point. Depends on what happens in the next couple of days! Ack.

green bean casserole (first time making it, no one eats it but me and my dad, but that's okay), selection of olives for an olive plate, dates, and our Tofurkey (or Quorn roast, can't decide) with stuffing & vegetarian gravy.

Mac n cheese! My family is so big, works out that we all do about one thing each.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@tororojo: You are NOT lame. We're doing the exact same thing! Cranberry sauce in cans and a dessert (cheesecake).
grapefruit / 4669 posts
@Adira: @sweetooth: So glad to hear it! I don't even eat cranberry sauce; it just sounded easy and festive so I claimed it for out potluck.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@tororojo: I like the jellied cranberry sauce (which many claim isn't even cranberry sauce), so I'm bringing that AND a can with actual cranberries in it, so I figure that's good enough.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@tororojo: My Mom makes the fresh cranberries for my Dad. I think he is the only one that eats it. Everyone else eats the canned kind, well those that eat them. I don't like them. And it isn't lame, being smart claiming the easy stuff. I always pick something I like to cook and is easy
pomegranate / 3452 posts
Sweet potato biscuits
Cranberry orange jalapeƱo salsa
Cornbread apple sausage stuffing
Baked kale chips
Yum!!
grapefruit / 4669 posts
@Adira: I grabbed a can of each, too!
@Smurfette: If I were gonna eat cranberry sauce, I'd love to try the fresh kind but I think my dinner plate is complete without it...I do love claiming the easy stuff!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: @tororojo: I think my dad is the only one that likes the real cranberry stuff too!! The rest of us like the canned jellied goodness.
I was at a Thanksgiving feast over the weekend and someone brought brandied cranberries! I was thinking those sounded pretty good, but was advised not to try them because of the brandy, haha.

First year in .. 16 years that I won't be cooking thanksgiving dinner!
We're eating out
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@sweetooth: so you make it exactly like mashed potatoes but use cooked cauliflower? Do you cook till mushy?
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I'm about to go shopping for ingredients now. This thread is making me so hungry!
grapefruit / 4669 posts
@Adira: Brandied cranberries sound delicious! Which takes us back to boozy desserts and pregnancy...I guess that one is probably not okay. Maybe next year!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@tororojo: haha, yeah! You don't cook it very long after you add the brandy, so I think there's still plenty of alcohol left, so probably not good for us!
pomegranate / 3244 posts
I am bringing sweet potato casserole and pecan and pumpkin pies to dinner at my cousin's house!! yumyumyum...so excited, especially for DH (it his 1st American thanksgiving!).
