DH is NOT a sweets fan at all. But birthday "cakes" are important to me so I "bake" him something every year! I usually find a VERY light, no sugar, no frosting, et al recipe. Sometimes I do pie because he likes certain pies.
His birthday is coming up in a few weeks so I need new ideas!
What do you "bake" for a birthday boy/girl that doesn't like sweets?

Does he like fruit? I've seen cute blog posts where people cut a watermelon into a cake shape and decorate it with other fruit and that is really cute. Or um... make him a meatloaf and frost it with mashed potatoes? haha

Does he like pancakes? You can always dress up a short stack with some candles and fruit.

@deerylou: haha he actually does that for me because I LOVE his pancakes. And we plan to do that for the kid(s). But he's pancake guy in our family!

-a stack of potato pancakes, frosted with sour cream and green onion "sprinkles"
-quiche
-a wheel of brie, baked in puff pastry
-a loaf of zucchini/pumpkin bread
-baked mac n' cheese with crumb topping

@locavore_mama: you can make it unsweet with a savory biscuit and the sweet strawberries. That's how my husband likes it.

You can make homemade cream puffs and make the filling not very sweet (maybe just whipped cream) or make a slightly sweet vanilla whipped cream filling. Then you can assemble it into a tower or small cake shape

Does he like cheese? How about a mini "cheese cake"- the trend that is popular at weddings? Just one or two rounds/tiers of whatever cheese he likes, decorated in fruit etc?

I didn't want to give DS too much sugar in his birthday cake so I made a coconut loaf into cupcakes. Not too sweet at all, but really yummy. You could just put fresh whipped cream not too heavily sweetened on top? I got the recipe from the Sprouted Kitchen cookbook.

I used to make peanut butter rice crispy bars, but with LO's allergy won't be able too. I need to come up with a new treat! He does love ice cream cake!

What about those steamed chinese cakes with fruit on top? They aren't super sweet.
Or banana bread....you can cut some sugar out.
