I love sociolinguistics and how we have different names or words for things depending on where we are from!
Also where are you from?

I grew up in NJ and we call them subs, but live in Westchester County, which is just north of NYC where everyone calls them wedges! Weird.

Sub- I grew up in upstate New York, in between New York City and Albany. Some people in that area definitely called them a hero.
nectarine / 2951 posts
@travellingbee: I use hero, but only when referring to a hot Italian sandwich, like a meatball hero. Otherwise, sub.

@rachiecakes: I thought grinders were only hot ones?
I grew up on the west coast and call them subs. I live in Maine now where everyone calls them "Italians", unless they are hot, then they are sometimes grinders and sometimes Italians. It's hard to keep straight haha

I voted for sub since that's what I called them growing up in California. But now that I'm in louisana they're poboys.

Sub. I'm from Boston. I hear Grinder alot too but I personally never use that term. Growing up, there was also a shop near us that called them Spukies.
Everyone called them Hoagies when I lived in Philly.
I find this stuff fascinating.

Hoagie or a Sub. It's a Hoagie when I'm talking to my Philly fam, and sub anyplace else. I thought a Grinder was just a hot sub warmed in the oven. Quiznos used to make grinders, but now I rarely if ever see them.

@yoursilverlining: at the local pizza shops it usually says, Grinders: Hot (list of hot) Cold (list of cold)

@rachiecakes: huh, so weird. We're only like 2 hours apart, but apparently grinder has a whole new meaning up here I'm team sub so I'm really an outcast any way you look at it!

I'm originally from Albany, NY and I call it a sub.
@rachiecakes: So does the restaurant named Subway just seem kind of random then?
coconut / 8279 posts
@ShootingStar: and our actual subway is the T
I know they have locations in malls, but I feel like most people I know get grinders from a local shop instead. Same goes for pizza.

@rachiecakes: LOL about the T. At home we get subs from local pizza places, but at work we have 2 stand alone Subways nearby, plus one in the mall, so we eat there occasionally. Now I'm craving Subway .

I'm from NY and have always called it a hero, I live in CT now and people call it a sub or grinder.

Sub or hoagie. I mostly say hoagie because it's fun, though. And this:

Sub. I grew up in NE but in PA they are hogies. It still sounds weird to me though.

Sub. But, the bread is a hoagie roll, lol.
Grew up in Upstate NY, and in the South now, where it's still a sub.

Before I opened the thread, my first instinct was "Hoagie," but in actuality, I don't really think I use that word much unless I am referring specifically to the rolls. If I wanted DH to go to the store to get long rolls, I'd ask him to pick up some "hoagie rolls."
But if we are heading out to eat long sandwiches, we would call them subs.
