I just got back from a trip to the mall with LO, who was in her stroller. Every lady that walked by stopped and made a comment about how cute she is. She has big blue eyes and people will usually comment on those too. I always find the whole situation awkward and never really know what I'm supposed to do/say. I usually just say thank you and move on but it just seems weird to me to say thanks since it's not really a compliment to me. Anyone else feel this way?

I just say thank you. Or I do the whole mommy "can you say thank you?" bit, even though he's only 8 months and obviously can't.

I used to take things more literally, but most of the time people are just making friendly conversation. Now I just smile and say, thanks!

It always makes me uncomfortable too! I smile, look at how my child is reacting and say thank you.

I awkwardly say thanks. It always makes me feel weird, though obviously I think my LO is cute too.

I usually look at her and tell her to say thank you. obviously she can't talk yet but I still always say that.

I always say thank you. People always comment on my LOs hair (it's red and he has a ton for a 4 month old) so I feel your pain on the awkwardness.

I either say thank you or tell lo to say thank you..... which makes things awkward because she's 17 months and doesn't know thank you yet. But she's big for her age so she looks older so they probably thinks she should be able to say it and they just sit there waiting and I don't think about that until its too late. I'm just so used to asking her to say things.

I say thank you but find it awkward when they have a kid with them too - like, uh, your kid's pretty cute, too? haha

I love that, it's so sweet of people. I just smile and thank them. Who doesn't like knowing that they made a cool child? Although I do enjoy now that my girl is old enough that people more often comment on her speaking or her smile, and not just her looks.

Don't get me wrong, I love that people compliment her and think she's cute. Just sometimes it feels awkward, like when they talk to her or ask her a question. She's 7 months old so it's not like shes going to answer.

I just smile and say thank you. Then, I try to make a break for it before they strike up a full blown conversation. It gets awkward after that.
@rachiecakes: hahaha yes!! I never know whether I should give them the same compliment or not. I feel rude if I don't and kind of dumb if I do.
@BeachMama: I hate that too! I feel ridiculous when I'm answering a bunch of questions directed at LO.
