I think Lawson is cute if it has some meaning.

I think you have to tread lightly and obviously its hard to read over text if someone is just throwing a name out there, of if its their current #1 choice.

I usually say I like it, but I do take context into consideration. If it's like the 5th name they've asked me, I'll say "oh, I like Doris, but I like Sophie much better!" (i.e. circle back to another name they've mentioned). That way I'm in the clear if they select Doris, but I've been honest with my preference.

In your sister's case (struggling with names), I would have said I loved it, but then continued to spit ball names.

You should be honest with your family and I think you weren't that harsh.. She should know that there is a risk in asking the opinions of others. Which is why we don't share name ideas with anyone!!!!

Sounds like a no win situation. I mean once a baby has the name they always seem to grow into it.

I guess I'd apologize for hurting her feelings, but I'd also probably say something to the effect of I didn't want to lie. This is a close family member; you should be able to be honest. It's not like you would have been nasty about it if she did use it.

I'm a pretty firm believer in "don't ask for opinions if you don't actually want them" -- which is why we'll likely just keep our LO's name a secret until he's here That being said, of course you should always be tactful, but really, a person should never say, "What do you think of this name?" if the only acceptable answer is going to be, "OMG, I love it!"
