I had a rough night last night and couldn't sleep. I must have fallen asleep around 2am and I woke up at 5am not being able to fall back asleep.
What do you do when you can't sleep? Lie in bed and keep trying or get up and do something else?

Depends what time it is, how long I've been trying, and why I can't sleep. This morning after my 5am pee break I had a hard time getting back to sleep. I wasn't uncomfy or anything, just couldn't get back to sleep. I just laid there and finally conked out again around 6:30. Sometimes I read on my kindle or play on my phone (kindle preferred to phone bc it tends to make me sleepier). Sometimes though if it is late enough I just give up and get up.

Toss and turn. Last night I had a little cry. I can't ever sleep anymore. R STTN but I don't even get 4 hour stretches.
I am exhausted.

I usually try breathing deeply & slowly while counting backwards from 100 & if I'm still not asleep I'll count forward. If that doesn't work I'll drink some sleepy time extra tea & try to read or watch TV & then try again.

I try to meditate. for realz. I try to clear my mind completely. I'm not sure if this is true, but an old friend told me that monks use counting to 10 forward and then backward and then forward etc, to clear their minds. If they let a thought slip through they start over from one again. You have to try and picture each number in your mind.
So... Whether or not that's true, it does work for me.
I have never been the type of person to get up in the night if I can't sleep. Not sure what I would do? I think that comes from my upbringing? Haha my parents trained me really well to stay in my room at night I guess. I feel like I'm not allowed to get up! It's night time! Sleep! Haha so silly.

I check FB/IG, etc on my phone, and then just lay there hoping I can get back to sleep!

This was me last night! I woke up around 3:45 and couldn't fall back asleep. I usually just lay there for a while and if I can't fall back asleep I go out into the living room and watch tv in the dark really low and try to fall asleep there. I don't like to do that often, but I've done it 3-4 times in the past last months of pregnancy.

Once it's been long enough that I'm pretty sure I won't fall asleep any time soon, I usually get up and play video games with the sound off/low. It's quiet enough it won't bother DH, and doesn't require a lot of lights like reading.

pre-pregnancy, I'd sometimes get out of bed and work a little. working without caffeine would make me sleepy again! now that I'm pregnant and this happens a lot, I make myself stay in bed and just toss and turn, sometimes for hours sometimes I'll look online at my phone, but that makes me wake up more.

I usually lie there and stress about not getting enough sleep, which is not productive!

I don't have this problem anymore but when I used to, I would count backward from 100, a trick my mom taught me. A lot of the time I will not make it to the end. I just have to keep my mind from racing.

I haven't had this problem much recently but I usually get a glass of milk and fall back to sleep in minutes. If that doesn't work I try to go through relaxing my entire body starting with my toes. I don't usually make it past my feet before falling asleep.

I read "what to expect when you're expecting". Always puts me to sleep!

@fussygal: I do this as well. Doesn't happen to me too often, but it happened a lot when I was pregnant. I got very familiar with the 3am newscast on ABC

I'll usually lay in bed for a little bit and try to fall back asleep. Lately, though, not sleeping is the result of being uncomfortable, so it's best for me to get up. I'll HB or do some work-either it puts me back to sleep, or I get something done. Win-win, except for the nights where I'm up for the day at 3 a.m.

Toss and turn. If I'm not close to sleep I may get out of bed and do something. Sometimes, when I really need sleep, I will flip and fall asleep with my head at the foot of the bed - just changing my orientation in the room can help a lot.

I started listening to podcasts and it really helped. I really love You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes. he interviews comedians mostly and its so interesting. Mark Marin is good too. A book on tape could also do the trick if you have one at the ready. Good luck. Insomnia blows. I've suffered from it all my life.
