I read it really fast!

R can't ask for books yet but I'll read it anyway...skipping some pages if possible. My parents tried to do that to me but I always caught them.

There is only one book that falls into this category but I tell them in a very cheerful voice that we are going to save it to read with daddy at bedtime- I already knew their mom couldn't stand it either. Of course after a week of this trick I found out the dad hated it too so we hid it. It was not contributing much to the world literature collection so we were ok with ditching one book.

I usually cave, as long as I have the time. However, I am not above "disappearing" a book here or there if I dislike it that much. Sometimes permanently. And he knows that he can't pick a long one before nap and bedtime. We love Richard Scarry but I'll be damned if I'm going to read him one of those epics at the end of the day.

I always read it. There is concrete benefit in reading the same book over and over (painful as it may be) and a reason that kids are wired to want that.

Ellie was a "late" reader, and slower to learn the alphabet and some of those literacy skills than many of her peers, but in first grade she is reading at a 5th grade level and easily tackling chapter books. I really think her experiences being read to are what made the biggest difference. Some books are really bad, though. We have one board book about "Chilly Critters" that my mom sent to Lorelei and she loves it and it is just so awful.

It depends. If I don't want to read it because it's truly junk, I'll generally read it and then make it disappear. I will sometimes make up the story for books where the pictures are good but the writing is poor.

I don't read books twice in the same sitting, no matter how fantastic they are. Repetition is important, but I can reread it at bedtime or tomorrow. He'll still get the benefits of repetition and I won't lose my mind.
