What food(s) supposedly bring you good luck in the New Year?
I grew up eating collard greens and black eyed peas on New Years Day symbolizing wealth. Even though my husband's family has Southern roots too he didn't have special must-eat foods.

People around here (Central PA) do pork and sauerkraut, but my family never did it growing up. My ILs make it, but I don't normally eat it. I don't really like pork and I can't stand sauerkraut. I went 30+ years of my life without eating it on NYD, and my luck was always fine.

I didn't know this was a thing!
It's my birthday, so we usually have turkey tetrazzini since it's my favorite! And raspberry pie! Though when I was a kid, we'd have cake.

My DH insists on black eye peas and greens. He does cabbage. I'm not a fan of either, but I'm begged to at least have a bite of each. His southern roots run deep.

Growing up we didn't have any New Year's traditions but DH and I like to eat New Years soup with collards, black eyed peas, ham, etc and cornbread.

Black eyed peas and rice and this Caribbean dish called souse, which is essentially a pickled pig's feet. This is before my mother became a vegetarian.

Pork and sauerkraut! Actually we're doing bratwurst but it's made from pork.

@BKCaribBaby: people in Florida make "souse"! I have never tried it, but it's served quite a bit at large functions.
ETA: the souse I have seen here is more like a barbecued stew, but definitely all pig parts.

Greens, hoppin john and some sort of pig product. I hate greens and hoppin John, so I take like 1 bite for tradition. Ha ha.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yes, I've heard of that version recently, which I hear is more commonly eaten in Guyana. The one I eat is more like a mix of cucumbers, hot peppers, onions, etc. and is eaten cold.

Never knew this was a thing. I usually just make whatever I feel like making.

i had always heard Pork for new years... brings good luck
I live near philly and we usually end up and my grandparents' houses on new years day since they're only a few blocks off the Mummer's Parade route. Since everyone is going back and forth to the parade, my maternal grandmother does an open house and serves chili and roast pork/beef sandwiches, pasta and potato salad. Then we head over to my paternal grandmother's house after the parade and eat lasagna, roast chicken, tripe, antipasti, sausage and peppers, meatballs, ambrosia salad. Some of those foods they only make once a year for this occasion so we go hungry.

I'm Korean so we usually have a New Year's soup of beef broth, shredded beef, and coin-shaped rice dumplings that symbolize wealth, and there's usually some potstickers thrown in there too. That's served at breakfast. Since its also my dad's birthday on New Year's, we usually have "birthday soup" which is a seaweed soup with shredded beef as part of lunch or dinner later in the day. Lots of soup!

@Adira: that's my birthday too!
We have black eyed peas and collard greens at some point, but we usually go out for a nice dinner for my bday.

I love pork and sauerkraut. DH's family told me about it years ago and I do it every year. I think it's a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition to bring you luck.
