Do you lie? Not say anything?
I'll usually try to find one feature I like and say something about that. Like "your baby has such big beautiful eyes! "

If the kid is really ugly, I don't bother with a compliment... the parent probably knows the kid is ugly anyway.
I will then usually ask something about how big or old the baby is...

I don't say anything. I'll just say "awww.. hello little guy/girl." In a cutesey baby voice. I don't like to lie.

I don't like to lie either, so I say "What a sweet baby."
persimmon / 1202 posts
Yeah, I just don't comment on the looks. My goddaughter came out looking... awful... Now she looks like a mini Billy Piper, though, so there's hope for other ugly babies.

I don't like to lie either. I comment about something else, like "she's so alert!" or "Look at all that beautiful head of hair." etc.

Sometimes I say he/she looks just like you (or other parent), which is often true. There is always something good to say about a baby, so there is no need to lie.

I lie but I don't think they will never be cute. I think all babies will have their cute moments and when I say it, I really do mean it.

Haha, I asked my coworkers to please tell me the truth if I had an ugly baby. You know, when you shrink back in horror at the ugliness kind of ugly. My boss at the time told me that in the eyes of the parents all babies are cute, even the ugliest ones.
I just lie and say how cute they are. I think parents would catch on if you compliment them on their head of hair, even though we're caught up in the beauty of our babies, we're not totally oblivious! Plus, beauty is so subjective, what you think is attractive is ugly to me and vice versa!

I find one feature that I can make a positive comment on. I'll say something like, "Wow! Look at how hair she has!" Or, "He has huge eyes!" And like @Looch says, every single baby is the cutest to their mothers.

I don't lie in this situation.
"Now that's a baby!" "Looks just like you." "Already smiling!" "Wow, what a smart baby" "He's already so big! Aww"
@FancyGem: exactly

I feel uncomfortable lying. I don't think you HAVE to say "your baby is so cute". That is so cliche anyway. Like when people post pictures on Facebook and then 20 people proceed to write "Your baby is so cute". I mean - whatever! (But I guess it's a lot easier to write it on Facebook than face-to-face) I think you can always come up with another discussion point about the baby when you see them in person.

I have to say SOMETHING even on facebook, because I know they've all seen/heard me gush over my one friends most adorable baby ever. Like seriously, the cutest baby on the face of the planet.
So I say something like "Wow, she's getting so big! Look at those big blue eyes! Aww, her face is so expressive!"
Yeah. Don't wanna lie unless I REALLY have to.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@yoursilverlining: I couldn't agree more.
Also, I find that even when I think the baby is quite unattractive, the parents still think he/she is cute...

I'm worried my baby will be ugly, and I'll be the one people are lying to! I generally just ask how old they are or avoid comments on their apperance. I don't care if the parents realise I don't think their kid is cute, I don't really like kids anyways. (My husbands loves kids though!)

I think almost all babies are cute--even the ones that look like little monkeys--simply because small humans in cute outfits are just cute to me. It's like monkeys and bulldogs--ugly, but I still think they're cute. So, I don't have to lie.
My best friend and sister have promised to let me know if my baby is ugly. I don't think most parents know that they have ugly babies because they are blinded by love.

I'm also afraid of having an ugly baby. Well - newborn! I have this weird thing about people coming to visit us in the hospital and being like, "..Oh!" HAHA.
I don't lie to people though. Like others, I'll find something nice to say.

I think every baby is cute in some way. They are so teeny and trusting and have such expressive eyes and the smallest mouth and nose. Even when they first come out and look all wrinkly they are still cute to me. I think the term "ugly baby" is an oxymoron because just being a baby makes them the furthest thing from ugly.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
I say "Oh what an adorable outfit he's wearing!" Which can be taken as 'your baby is adorable' to a parent who is searching for that compliment.
clementine / 889 posts
I agree with MrsBells, I think all babies are cute, even if some are cuter than others.
I of course think my son was the cutest baby in the world. But there was a span of a few weeks (around 4-5 weeks) where his head was changing shape a bit and went from being pretty round to more squarish. During those weeks I didn't think he photographed well and thought he looked a little funny in pictures.
I think most kids at least go through a phase of awkward features at some point.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
Do people really know when they're newborns aren't so cute? I always think that they must, but people keep telling me how you always think your baby is the cutest baby in the world. My good friend begged me to tell her if her daughter was ugly, and I promised I would, but I think I still would have lied.
pear / 1965 posts
I try to find other things to say, but I cant say that I wouldnt lie. I would.

Newborns are weird looking! 99%. My friend was all worried her newborn would be all red and swollen and weird looking, and I told her, don't worry. HE WILL BE. But you will not realize it. Months later, you look at the photos and you're all, wow, he really was all swollen and red and alien-ish! Put on those mommy glasses.
Now, when they're older than a month or so, and they're ugly, that's a different story!

Like others have said I try to comment on something else, or find a feature I do think is cute. If I have to lie I will. It's not the hugest deal since often ugly babies grow into cute kids/adults. It sort of sucks for babies since when they are really young, there aren't too many other things to compliment or judge besides how they look!

@sloaneandpuffy: I wasn't offended at all, I thought it was a super cute saying!
Sometimes on Hellobee, I forget I'm a man anyway.

HAHAHA @mrbee!!!!! We need to get more dad's on this site!

My go-to phrase for years has been, "How precious!" It's true. No lie in there. I also do like others and comment on another feature - look how big, how much hair, smart, or just do the "awww."
