Alllll for it. The amount of money we waste prosecuting and punishing marijuana sellers/users is absurd.

I don't smoke pot (never even tried it), but I'm all for it. I'm also on board with legalizing prostitution, too, but that's another story...

@HabesBabe: I'm another in the *never tried it, but all for it* camp for the reasons @Mae: posted!

VERY for it. Never have used, never will, but I'm a big supporter of legalization.
bananas / 9628 posts
all for it! legalize, regulate & tax it. i can't even wrap my head around why it's criminalized. what a waste of resources punishing people for it.

@Greentea: if you don't mind sharing, could you elaborate on the reasons why you're against it? not why you might be personally against it, but your reasons why you believe it should be a crime?

I second (third? Fourth?) those who say they've never done it, never will, but support legalization.

I like the idea because at the moment it's a great source of income for criminals. I think it might actually encourage a more realistic view of it's effects. I hate the whole it's harmless and has no side effects thing. If it was legalised I think there would be more research and better public advice on the real dangers, like mental health and lung disease (joint is as bad as 10 cigs).

I dislike all smoking, so I'm not wild about it. But if legalization can regulate something that happens regularly anyways, I can see the benefit of it.
pomegranate / 3759 posts
Yes! Take it off the streets, tax the hell out of it and lets the cops focus on something more important.

In the words of Bob Marley and the Wailers, "Legalize it, yeah yeah. That's the best thing you can do."
I have smoked it, don't like it but think they should do with it what has been done to alcohol and cigarettes. Haven't ever heard a good argument against legalization.
eggplant / 11824 posts
@Snowdrop: totally agree with you about hating the "it's harmless" argument. No, it's not harmless. Doesn't mean it should be illegal, either.
I don't really care either way (i just don't feel strongly about it), but I don't have any really good arguments why it shouldn't be legalized.

Legalize it. I can't imagine it's effects are any worse than those of alcohol or cigarettes. Criminalizing it is just wasting valuable resources.
papaya / 10560 posts
Legalize it. I feel like it's almost just as easy to access as alcohol or cigarettes in some cases. Might as well be taxable!!
pomegranate / 3212 posts
For it! It CAN be harmful, and it can be totally harmless as well. Regulate it. Tax it. All that jazz.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Legalize it and regulate it like we do alcohol. Already DUI's cover people under the influence, but I wouldn't want it to open the flood gates for even riskier behavior. People probably shouldn't come to work high, but what they do at home that doesn't spill over to work is their business.
@Snowdrop: speaking of cigs, I have heard people begin smoking cigs to intensify the pot high. Long after these people stop smoking pot, they are still addicted to nicotine.

Not a smoker but total supporter for legalization...tax that shiiiiat

Never done it and don't plan on it but legalize it! It's less harmful than cigarettes.
pomegranate / 3706 posts
Legalize it. It's legal here in WA now. And it doesn't have to be smoked, so it's not necessarily harmful- at least in that way.
papaya / 10570 posts
I don't agree with it at all.
I have several friends whose lives have been ruled and probably ruined by it - they're just losers because it makes them content to be bored, if that makes sense? One particular friend can't sleep without it but it makes him paranoid and anxious when he uses it for a few days in a row. It was all good fun when they were young but now we're all in our thirties it's not so much fun any more.
If it was legal, I would have tried it - and I would have liked it, God knows my relationship with alcohol is bordering unhealthy - but because it's not I haven't. I was too much of a goody two shoes!
I don't want my daughter to grow up in a world where it's deemed acceptable.
PS - they should ban regular smoking too.

@Cherrybee: I've seen that too! But lives are ruined by alcohol too, and that's legal?
papaya / 10570 posts
@mrbee: Exactly! And that fact alone disproves any arguments that legalising marijuana will allow us to control it's use, encourage sensible use etc. Alcohol is legal but does our society interact with it responsibly - no! So shouldn't we be looking at alcohol and asking if it should be banned rather than adding even more legal substances into the mix?
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@Cherrybee: but we did ban alcohol here in the States, with a constitutional amendment no less! Prohibition was widely regarded as a disaster on many levels though... except for organized crime, which made out very well.
apricot / 469 posts
@Cherrybee: agree! Unlike cigarettes, pot can change personalities and the health effects are horrid. I am in the camp that cigarettes should be banned though due to their health effects.
I get the alcohol argument, but think you can drink responsibly, but I don't think you can smoke cigarettes or pot responsibly as even one is damaging to your health and the health of those around.
I totally get the 'tax it' argument though.
I suppose I just feel if we had been more careful with legalizing cigarettes back in the day, so many lives would have been saved, and pot is even worse for your health and once something is legalized it's virtually impossible to ban it even if the effects are terrible.
