From what I have been reading, people are irate about this! These guys are asset managers from Greenwich, CT and are already rich. Given the whole Occupy Wall Street movement and such lately, you have a lot of people angry about the rich getting richer. But to me, anybody can play and win the lottery. They spent $1! I think they will give a good amount to charity (I hope).

I stopped playing the lottery when I got married. We have a comfortable life and it seems almost vulgar to me to actively try to win a couple of million when you already are financially fortunate. I really feel like they took that winning ticket away from someone that could have really used it to change their whole life.

Since they won the lottery I dont see how anyone can hold that against them. I personally have never bought a lottery ticket because I think my money just ends up in someone elses pocket.
People who really need the money desperately should put save their $1 a day rather than a buy a lottery ticket that could end up making someone else richer

I think they didn't win the lottery. There is a trust that was set up and that's where the money is. Those guys are a front for one of their customers who actually won it. That customer is going to play with all of it on the stock market and make more millions. Why a millionaire would play the lottery is beyond me.

I actually heard a rumor that they are representing an anonymous trust. Basically someone won the lottery but doesn't want their friends and family to know (because of all the drama other people have experienced when they have won the lottery) and then hired these guys to collect the money on their behalf and invest/manage it.
If these guys really did win the lottery I see no issue with it. They bought a lottery ticket just like anyone else and they got lucky. Yes, I'm sure the Occupy Wall Street people feel this is somehow unfair and that they are in fact owed a portion of these winnings... but you don't want to get me started on them : )

i thought i read that they did win it and set up a trust. and i though they won $250M. whatever, people are just bitter. whoever plays, can win. who cares if they're rich or not. i bet it's better for people who have money to win the money. then they'll perhaps KEEP the money, instead of losing it all in whatever most people lose it in. although their lawyer did state that they were giving bulk to charity.

I'd rather see lottery winnings invested smartly and last someone their whole lives and/or donated to charity.
This scenario doesn't bother me.
Watching a lottery winner (or athlete) make millions, blow it on boats, airplanes, and mansions, and file bankruptcy a few years later, does bother me.

Lotteries are basically a tax on the poor. States love them though, because it helps them fill the holes in their budgets and the lottery tax is opt-in.

Well, if you think about, the people who are short on cash can't buy lottery tickets. And people who can afford to buy lottery tickets are most likely a bit better off anyway (unless they're just addicted to gambling, or it's a one time thing, etc.). But in general, I would think that the richer you are, the more money you can spend in the lottery, and the more likely you are to win.

@Panda: When you're poor and buy a lottery ticket, you're not buying just a ticket. You're buying hope. If I had to choose between hope and lunch, I would choose hope!
I've lived without both before at different times, and going without hope is way worse (for me, at least).

It's irritates me that rich people won the lottery but of course, it's not their fault, I'm just jealous, I guess. I also hope that they donate it to a good cause.

@ecogirl: This really isn't true (I work in education). What happens is they cut education funding by $10M but then give education $10M from the lottery. Its more a marketing ploy.

@mrbee: Thats a good way of putting it (buying hope). The odds are so terrible and yet people play all the time. If everyone saved that $1 spent every week it would may help them with actual needs. That is pretty much my whole issue with the "Occupy" protests, most of the rich have gotten rich by taking risks, working hard, spending/saving wisely and therefore they should have the rewards of all that. Its a free country and anyone can try to make millions if they so choose.

I don't really think I have any say in how they spend their money. All I know is I need to friend one of them and get in with their next lottery pool!

I say good for them! Everyone who plays the lottery has an equal (while minusculy small) chance of winning and last time I checked there was no rule that rich people can't gamble. They have just as much right to win the lottery and enjoy it as anyone else.

I think it's a bit crazy that people are upset that financially stable people won the lottery. First-- it's a lottery. By definition is it governed by chance, without any source of discrimination.
If you want a chance to win, you should buy a ticket. However, just because you are poor does not mean that you should get a bigger chance to win.
I also don't mind the lottery as tax. Yes, it is true that people with less income tend to buy more tickets. However, that is free will. The outcome of the lottery money is not hidden, and it is generally understood that that money is going somewhere (government/education). If you CHOOSE to buy a ticket, then you are CHOOSING to spend your money in that way. If you don't want to support the government (education, etc) as a "tax" then don't buy a ticket.

I agree with @mamalove. Sometimes it doesn't seem fair (i.e. rich people winning money), but it's called a lottery, no?
FIL has been buying tickets for years, I'm hoping his turn is up soon!

@mrbee: Lol, I've suffered depression for 8 years, I can handle no hope.. but I can not handle a growling stomach. Besides, I'm too logical to put any hope in a lottery. And too unlucky. Oh well, guess I have to keep my job.
They are pretty lucky!
