Working on my registry and trying to decide whether to go with a white noise machine or sounds and music. What works better for current moms?

We just play white noise. But our sound machine allows you to hook up an mp3 player to it if you wanted to!

White noise. We also used a lot of vibration with a thing that attached to the bassinet that vibrated and played music. Long term, though? White noise. Still use it today. If we forget to turn it on, our 3 year old reminds us she needs her machine on. http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM

White noise. We use HoMedics Sound Spa one, which has been great, but I would like to upgrade to a Marpac at some point.

I use a small fan. It kind of happened by accident. My husband and I sleep with a fan, so when she moved to her own room we got her one too, to keep it consistent. But it does drown out some noise.

Same one as @lady grey:
It has the option of rain, ocean waves, heartbeat, or plain white noise. I had read somewhere that the plain white noise was best so that's what we have always used.

White noise, but it does both. Our older prefers the music and I will let her have it during nap or up until I go to bed at night. I love our little machine (we now have two, one for each kiddo).

I'm sad to say....both. Lol DS is 2.5 and still wants a soother and white noise machine on.

White noise, one that doesn't have an auto shut off, that can run off batteries or plugged in (one time power went out during nap).http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0091E31KM/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

We have the same one as @Adira:. We mostly just use the white noise, but D went through a period where he was having trouble going to bed at night, and a friend suggested using the music they use at daycare. I plugged my iPod in and played some Rock-a-bye Baby music and he'd go right down. So every now and then it is nice to have the ability to plug in an iPod and play music! We also use it for dance parties sometimes.

We use an old iPhone that plays womb sounds (haha that sounds a little weird now LO is 18mo!) It is quite a pain because I have to charge it all the time, although very nice and portable. Next time I think I will go for some sort of plug in machine.

We use an old iphone with a white noise app (relax sounds) plugged into a radio/dock. We also have a cheap Conair one (from Amazon) that we use when we travel/for our nanny share.

White noise! Our machine plays many different sounds but we just keep it on white noise.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like it depends a bit on the baby/what you want. Thinking we are going to go with just white noise tho

We don't use either. I want LO to be able to sleep despite outside background noise. So far it is working great!

We have the same Graco one @Adira: posted, but we've only used the white noise option. We also run a very loud (on purpose) humidifier. For #2 I've registered for the Marpac because it comes so highly recommended.

We use white noise, and it seems to work well for my son. He's been listening to it since he was a newborn.

We have a Sleep Sheep that we use the heartbeat sounds on while she's fussy on the changing table or while we're trying to get something done & can't hold her, but we don't necessarily intend to use it for regular naps/bedtime if we can help it so that she doesn't become reliant on it.

@MamaBear87: We don't have a beaner yet, but we'll use white noise. Both DH and I use white noise still! (fan facing the wall, haha)

White noise. It plays other things but I find them distracting. But we did have a mobile when he was little that played classical music. We both loved it! It just wasn't the same purpose as white noise.
