LMW's first birthday party is this Saturday (eeeep!) and there are so many things I'm not doing. I don't know why! For instance, I just realized that I don't have a "happy birthday" banner, while that was one of the only custom things I ordered for Wagon Jr.'s first birthday party! I have several other decorative banners, but none that actually spell out Happy Birthday.

As things you NEED? Singing happy birthday! For things you don't NEED but would make a party fun? Singing happy birthday and balloons. Don't overthink it or stress out about overdoing it. No one will remember goodie bags, signs or photos or hats afterwards.
PS. Seriously? She's going to be ONE already? Impossible.

I just said balloons and singing happy birthday. I didn't even buy balloons for DS's first birthday; DD and I just made him some out of construction paper.

I think the only must-haves are Singing Happy Birthday, though goodie-bags for the kids would be nice. Everything else is just fluff.

My DD will be one next month, and we are doing a smash cake for sure! I don't really think it's necessary after age 1 though... and always, singing happy birthday is a must. We've been singing it to DD to get her ready.

She's not going to remember any of it. I'd say a cake and photos taken of her with her cake/family guests or video of everyone singing happy birthday would be good so she can look back on it. I forgot to vote but goodie bad for kids.
