If the box is Asian/Pacific Islander, that would be the box they choose, I suppose. But if it gets any more specific than that, I don't know, since they are 2 different Asian ethnicities! I hope you are right that it will be moot by the time they start filling out forms.

She gets English and Spanish from us and Canadian because she was born here. All three of us will have a different passport.

I wonder if it will become more common to allow people to choose multiple races/ethnicities. I want to leave it up to our child to decide whether they identify as Korean or Jewish, but we're afraid that whatever they choose will end up making one of us feel rejected in some way. So here's to no more "check one"!

I'm a teacher, and I've noticed that the past few years they usually offer a "mixed race" category.

Our kid will be mixed race, so I'm fine with them checking that box, but I have definitely thought about this before it terms of things like scholarships and college entrance.

Do any of you do that? Scheme to try to figure out which angle will be "better" for admission? I know this is crazy, since we're 18 years away from college admission, but still.

I worked in a very ethnically diverse school for a long time, and I had students from every ethnicity on the planet, as well as so many combinations of mixed race, and I was always interested to see how they marked their own race on standardized tests. Several mixed race students would bypass the "mixed race" box to check a box of a specific ethnicity. I always found that interesting, but I would never pry to ask any questions about it.

So, I'll be curious to see what our own kid picks on test forms. DH is south asian, and I'm white american, so "mixed race" would probably work better that marking "asian" or "caucasian" for any schools that have hidden quotas. Crazy that we even have to consider those things now, right? But I do think about this ever since there was a widely publisized case of an Indian high school senior who was Valedictorian, made a perfect score on his SATs, was on several teams and committees...and didn't get into any of his top 10 (!) school choices. He ended up going to the local not-so-great-state school.

On the same note, when "east Indian" is a choice (what does that even mean, btw), DH REFUSES to mark that, because he's not from India. He always marks, "other".

Boring/white!

White. But I'm sure the system will be overhauled by the time the kid is old enough for it to matter. Federal reporting on race and ethnicity makes no sense, especially since race is not a biological reality and the way they divide up racial/ethnic categories is pretty poorly done.

Mixed Asian?

LO is 1/4 Mexican-American/Hispanic and 3/4 white but since hispanic has been absorbed into "white" as of the 2010 census, I guess she will just pick "white".

African American or Mixed

They'll check the "white/non Hispanic" box.

Caucasian.

They would select "mixed" as they would be 1/2 filipino, 1/4 mexican, and 1/4 white

There's usually an "other"

DH is Indian and he usually doesn't know what to check now. "Asian" doesn't seem accurate.
