LO is still too young for this... But here's an idea for you. When I was little my mom and a few of her friends did a little "science club" for their kids. I think there were four of us? Every Saturday all the kids would go to one mom's house and do some sort of learning/science project. The moms dropped us off so it was kind of genius because in exchange for hosting one crazy Saturday a month the moms got three Saturdays where they had a few hours to themselves. The kids had tons of fun and learned something!

I have taken the kids to free story and craft hour at Barnes and Noble. They have them every Saturday at my BN. Also, Lakeshore Learning does a craft hour every Saturday as well (not sure if this store is in NY) and we have gone to that. However, I do tend to buy something in the store while I'm there, so I guess they aren't exactly "free"...
