My almost 2 year old LO recently had a medical treatment that gives her the side effect of horrible headaches. I give her Tylenol but what else can I do to help? Her Dr said there isn't much more I can give her...
What helps you when you get headaches? lying down? eating or drinking something? She clutches her head and screams...it kills me a little when it happens.

Advil/Motrin works better on headaches for me than Tylenol. Can she have that? The only other thing is laying in a dark room, and putting a cold washcloth on my head.

@autumnlove: oh no, so sorry for both you and her! We were given the okay to give Advil at her 6 months shots in case of fever so maybe try Advil?

Oh poor baby!
It's a little weird, but I've gotten some relief from drinking a coke in a warm shower. Otherwise cold, dark room with something over my eyes.
ETA: The caffeine helps me, but I am an adult and would feel weird about giving it to my toddler, especially in the form of soda. But maybe a little bit of tea with caffeine?

cold! I keep these socks in the freezer (not sure whats in them - rice maybe?) - I put them on the back of my head/neck and lay down - we also use them for the kids boo-boos

@looch: I just double checked and her discharge papers say no aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen or naproxen.

Well darn. I use aspirin for my headaches, it is the only thing that helps me.
You could try pressure points, or massage...there is also accupressure for children....I don't have any good sources, though.

@looch: the only thing that seems to help is Daddy but he is usually at work when the headaches strike!

@autumnlove: Also its just temporary relief but if you put your palms on her temples and squeeze a little it helps relieve the pressure. When I was in college my boss showed me this and it was wonderful - maybe you can have her lay down with ice and you can squeeze her temples for a minute or so to get thru that intense pain.

Personally, cold makes my head feel like it's going to explode. It HURTS when I have a headache. I need a hot compress to my forehead or my neck. Try the cold first, cuz I know that works for a lot of people, but if that doesn't work, try heat! And good luck. My heart broke a little reading about her clutching her head in pain - poor baby!

Omg that's so sad!!!!!!!! Headaches are the worst.
Usually I pop Tylenol bc I can't take ibuprofen.
Rest and fluids help too.

@autumnlove: putting pressure on my temples and deep breaths with my eyes closed. I normally use my fists on both sides of my head and push upward. I will rest my elbows on the counter or on my knees, support my head with my fists and push in and up. You could try using your fingers if she will let you.

You can also try soaking your feet in hot water. I get a lot of headaches, and the key (for me) is often to create a new sensation to distract from the pain. I think massaging your temples, soaking your feet in hot water, or rubbing your hands all achieve the same effect... it distracts your pain system with additional sensation, and provides a lot of relief!

@autumnlove: yeah, I know- good luck holding a toddler in water, but maybe if you could get in the shower with her, and hold/snuggle her to get the water on her head? Yeah, easier said than done!

Caffeine, darkness, quiet, and something cool on my forehead/back of my neck. When I was little and got a migraine (I have had them since I was 3), my dad used to wash my hands and feet with a cold washcloth while another cold washcloth was on my forehead. I can't even tell you how relaxing that was and how much better I felt! I would also give her an aspirin if she can keep it down/ is not nauseated. I'm sorry.
ETA: Heat (from showers or too many covers) always made my head hurt worse . . . fwiw.

@autumnlove: Could you cut it with some juice to entice her? I hate the idea of your sweetie suffering like that. Some kids even end up re-hospitalized with this kind of headache. They get hydrated by IV to help with the pain.

@autumnlove: Yeah . . . my parents were out, and the babysitter told my mom that I had been throwing a fit all night long. My mom said she found me curled up holding my head and crying. She suspected a headache/migraine because she has them, and thought it was really odd behavior from me (apparently I was a hair puller, but otherwise, I barely registered on the drama llama scale).

Sometimes it helps to squeeze a pressure point between the thumb and index finger, in the thick fleshy part. I just start squeezing and hold on for a while because the pain goes away as long as I squeeze that spot!

Putting a cold rag on my head and laying down in a dark room usually helps me. I hope she feels better soon!

I have bad migraines and headaches and I do the following:
Stay in a quiet, super dark room. Like cover the alarm clocks and light blocking curtains dark. I use a cold washcloth on my forehead and press my palms into my eyes (like #2 that MrBee posted). I try to drink a lot of caffeine and water. And I also do this one:
One pressure point that may help relieve your headaches is located in the webbing of your hand between your thumb and index finger. Hold your hand so your palm is facing the floor and pinch the webbing with the thumb and forefinger of your opposite hand. Squeeze this area until it is tender and continue to massage for 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat on the opposite hand. Do not stimulate this point if you are pregnant. So sorry to hear about your lo. I have chronic headaches vac get some relief from ice packs. Sometimes I sleep with one.
