All day I say things like "mama is hungry," "mama loves you so much" and "mama really would like you to nap." I didn't talk like this before having a baby. Anyone else do this? Maybe I'm subconsciously trying to insure that "mama" will be her first word.

HAHA! I was just noticing this week how I posted a pic of E and said that "we had to take a bath." Um, WE do not. (Although I could always use a shower.) SHE had to take a bath because SHE got paint all over her! "We're feeling a little tired." "We didn't take a good nap this afternoon" "We're getting a tooth right now." IT KILLLLS ME but then... I find myself doing it. AGH!

Ha - I do the same thing! I think I mostly do it so she associates the word "mama' with me, and that's an easier concept for her to grasp than "I". Like if I said, "I'm going to get your lunch ready" vs. "mama's going to get your lunch ready."

This is something I'm going to try to avoid doing, but it's hard not to do for some weird reason lol! I already catch myself talking that way when I am speaking to LO.

I totally LOL-ed at your comment "...I'm subconsciously trying to insure that "mama" will be her first word." because honestly, this is the sole reason I do it. Everytime he babbles something bababa or dadadada I end it with "mama...." HAHAHAHA! I know I'm crazy.

I will try to find it, but apparently it's hard-wired because it functions as a language acquisition aid for infants. If I remember right, it places emphasis on certain parts of speech. I think it's cross cultural. So you are really not just being silly.

@Mrs. Twine: that was my theory...something about it being an innate part of parentese anyway. Maybe it's to help them identify people easier?
I don't know about the "we" part, though. I find myself saying ridiculous things. "We have to wipe our bum!" Wtf? It's definitely his bum, not a collective one!

I always say "mama this", "mama that" so she learns to call me mama. I think it's a totally natural way to talk around babies.

haha I definitely refer to myself as mama and DH as daddy - I think ensure he calls us mama and daddy and not our first names, or "babe" as he has done before after I called DH "babe" lol.
I've never done the "we" thing though! unless I'm actually referring to something WE are doing - like going somewhere together.

Good to know I'm not the only one talking like a crazy person. She's been saying "mamamama" when she's upset/crying lately. Maybe I should just count it as her first word and move on
