I voted family, but I guess my stipulation with that answer would be ask long as you can find some sort of career back home. I think I would rather make some cuts to be close to our parents and siblings. We are very family oriented people (like see both sets of parents at least once a week) so this would be extremely hard for us.

I have been thinking a lot about this (see my crazy lady post asking for advice !) DH and I had to decide between moving across country for a slightly better job or staying here close to family with still good jobs but a bit less stable. Considering we would lose my salary and the cost of living would be higher it made more financial sense to stay.

In the end we chose to stay because I want my kids to grow up around their grandparents. The best childhood memories I have are from sleepovers at grandmas, big family celebrations and lots of support.

That being said it was not an easy decision and was the right one for us at this point in time. Who knows what will happen in 5 years!

ETA: it would depend on how financially comfortable we would be in each place- we would never give up having a good quality of life just to stay close to family. I would make sacrifices and live on a budget but not to the point where we have to worry about bills, or give up travelling & favorite hobbies

Being financially secure and providing a better future for your children. We are far from family right now too but at the moment this is the best place for us at this point in our lives. We have good jobs and live in a place with a lower cost of living so we are able to save and that's important to me. Our families are pressuring us to move home and that's our plan eventually but not until we feel like we can do it financially (it's much more expensive to live in MA than TN). I lived a six hour drive from my grandparents when I was growing up and didn't see them a ton but I still grew up knowing and loving them. And honestly I think it can be good to have some distance. My husband's whole family lives soooo close together and they all grow up and never leave. I feel like it doesn't even occur to them to go out and explore and move away and I think that's sad.

love and family closeness wont pay the bills so I would choose financial security.

I chose financial security!

Hubby and I live hours away from both of our families and we know it'll suck once LO is here. However, the opportunities where we live are significantly greater than if we lived closer to either side. We'll definitely do everything we can to keep family involved, but if I'm unable to provide for my family independently, I'd feel like I'm taking a step back in progressing in life since we always want the next generation to be better off than the previous one.
