Seeing how many Bees want 3+ kids on a different thread got me thinking about this.
What was the average family size where you live? And what was it like where you grew up? Do either of these things influence your family planning decisions?

I would say it's 2 - 3. You rarely see more than 3. I live in a DC suburb.

Where I grew up, about 90% of the families had two kids, including mine. The remaining families were large - 6-10 kids, and those families were largely part of a religious community that values large families. My mom tells me that the 2-kid thing was very big in the late '70s and '80s - that there was a movement to just replace yourselves.
Where I live now, very few people have 2 kids... my friends seem pretty split between wanting/having 3 and being 1 and done (because they want to stay in the city, be able to travel, afford private school, etc.). However, I was recently on vacation in a more religious part of the country and saw MANY families with 5-8 kids. It's interesting how family size seems to be both geographical and time-related.

1-2. There are many apartments and homes here tend to be small (and very, very expensive) so I think larger families tend to move to the suburbs.

3-4 growing up was pretty standard
2-3 is more standard now with my friends.

Most I see have 2, occasionally 3, rarely more. Friends mostly want/have 1 or 2. We hope for more like 4 (+?). I was raised one of 3 and DH was one of 2, both sets of parents say they wish they'd had another, so that probably influences us. We also don't buy into the overpopulation stuff, so that makes a difference in that we don't think big families are irresponsible. And my family is Catholic, so we're used to seeing people manage with truckloads of kids.

I feel like it's 2ish. I know a few families that have three (like I do), but a lot of the families I know are just starting out. Most have on kid who is 18 months old or younger.

2-3... I know a lot of people with 3 kids, but most of the time, their 3rd was an oopsie baby. That kind of terrifies me!

Most of my friends are 'one and done'. Friends in the 'burbs have 2 on average.

I'd say 2-3. 3 feels like it's being a new norm. I can't envision that for myself after watching what my brother goes through with twins and a daughter. A couple friends from high school have 4 kids which seems mind blowing to me.

I honestly have no idea! It is variable...
Eta: growing up it seemed like most people had 3 or more.

I rarely see families with more than 2 kids. I also know lots of couples who don't have any kids. So perhaps the average is 1!

1-2. We are in the city where it is expensive, the parents are usually older, and I think alot of people move to the suburbs when the first child reaches school age.

2ish. I rarely see large families, but where I live the lots and homes are fairly small.

It varies...I have a lot of friends with 2, which is probably the most common, though I have a few friends with 3, 4 and one with 5.

3-5. It's pretty high here. And growing up in the Christian and homeschooling community- many were 5-8 kids
