We have JK here, 4 by December 31st of that year they start JK (in September). LO will go to JK as a 3-year old (October baby), insane!! I can keep her out and she can just go to senior kindergarten, but it's either daycare or JK, unless I am on mat leave at that time, we'll see!

same here in MN - Sept. 1st. I'm a September baby and was older than all my classmates. I hated it! So all my friends were in the grade ahead - and then they all graduated before me
I'm glad J has a Feb. birthday.

I looked it up and our state says 5 before sept 1st. Lo was born on September 1st so I wonder how that will work.

5 by Oct, I'm sad bc my LO and my friends LO won't be in the same grade bc she was born in Oct.

Ours changed to Dec 31 I think.
@Mrs. Pen: My bday is right around yours, but I missed the cutoff the other way and was always the youngest. I almost failed kindergarten for being 'socially immature.'

I think ours is December, at least it used to be but it could have changed.

I googled CA state of education standards for the age and they have been moved to 5 before September 1 starting with the 2014-2015 school year and beyond. That means my LO will be a year behind her cousin in school, lame.

Oct 1st. F is 9-28 so we'll have to decide if we want him to go or not. Blerg. It's a decision I'm not looking forward too

August 31st, but it used to be October 15 until recently. I'm a September baby, so I was always one of the youngest. DH is a November baby, so even though we were in the same grade, he's almost a year older. LO is due in November as well.
I teach state-funded public pre-k, so my babies all have to be 4 by August 31.

September 1st here too. So my oct baby will have to wait a whole extra year to start kinder. It used to be in November in CA but they changed it recently.

Sept 1 here, too. DS is one of the youngest in his class, because his birthday is August 11.

@Beebug: We are in the same boat--my Halloween baby is starting full day JK in less than a month!
I contemplated keeping her in preschool, but the curriculum is the same for JK and SK, and it really does seem that everyone goes to JK, so we are too. Gah. Here goes nothing..

I think September 1st here. DD is Sept 27, so she'll be much older than the majority of her classmates I would think. My brother was older than his classmates (he was Dec, back then, the cut-off was Dec 31) and my Dad was younger (also a Dec) so I've seen the affects of both. I figure it may be easier to test her into kindergarten "early" if need be, as opposed to having to keep her back later. We will see!!

In Ontario, for JK, a child has to turn 4 by December 31 of that year. lO was born Dec 5, so she will be starting school at just past 3.5 years. Not sure if I'm a fan of that! She's a tiny girl to start with, and she'll be the youngest in the class...

Sept. 1 ! Our LO will be held back a year (Nov. due date). I turned 5 the week before I started kindergarten--I was young for my class.

@Bao: Yep, MI is Dec 1st:)
Used to be Dec 31st and a mom recently told me it was now Dec 1st. Annnnnd, they are in talks to changed it to Nov:/

Our district is September 1, but the one next to us is August 1.

@autumnlove: I think September 1st is the new mandate for all of California. They've been slowly pushing up the date with each year. Just a few years ago it was November/December.

Our county is 5 by August 1, but they are thinking about changing it to 5 by June 1. So my girl will be almost six before she goes to kindergarten unless we put her in a private school for a year.

@Mrs. High Heels: Does that mean my late December 2011 baby can attend transitional K? Or will she just start K the next year with the Jan-Sept 2012 kids?
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@autumnlove: you might be able to petition her into a transitional K program in your district. I know we have that option in my city, my friend is going to petition her Oct baby. Don't know what the chances of getting in are like though. I'm guessing its pretty competitive!

Our area is Dec 31. So, everybody born same calendar year is in the same grade.

Just out of curiosity, what are the issues with being the oldest kid in the class if you miss the cut off? From Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, wouldn't being the oldest kid be a benefit?

September 2 here. My girls are both born in the beginning of the year, so it doesn't matter... But there was a recent bill (that didn't pass) to move it to July 1.
They would have hated me as a skipper!

In our state it varies by town. In our current town and the town we want to be in by that time, it's Age 5 by Sept 1. Wagon Jr. is a December baby so he won't be going into Kindergarten until he's almost 6.

September 1 and I am so thrilled because Tor was born September 7th! One more year with my baby plus they say for boys it's better to be a bit older.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: do you know the reason why some counties are pushing the date up all the way to july? that's eliminating half the kids from that birth year! i understand september, but have a hard time wrapping my mind around july.
