I have a BA in psychology and don't use it at all. I wish i would have figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up before I spent all that time getting it...but i still don't know what I want to do

@Mrs. Pen: you will love nursing! It's so rewarding and so versatile in terms of places you can work and hours. Any idea what area you'd like to eventually work in? I have my BSN and worked in a pediatric ICU prior to LO. She's 8 months and we just moved, hoping to be settled and maybe find something part time by the times she's 1 or so.

I have a BA in History. I also have a Master's Degree in Public History. I use my degrees in my job as a records manager.

@babynumber1: right? Nothing like hands-on
BA in Social work Minor in sociology
Masters in social work and working on my Ph.D.
Unfortunately for me, I get accepted into the joint program. So, I had no choice but to pursue my Ph.D. I am done with the master's classes but I won't get my certification until the Ph.D requires are met. So, 2 more years and i'll be a triple threat, baby.
I generalized in undergrad, but in graduate school, I went for the School Social Worker certification.

@Sparks: I want to do either L&D (would love to work at a birth center!), or trauma/ER! I know they're so different haha. Although my main reason for choosing it is because of the passion I have to help people- I also couldn't resist the flexibility. Days, nights, part time, full time, OT, benefits, etc... So many perks...
Depending how things go DH and I have even discussed him transitioning to SAHD if my nursing career takes off someday!

@Ash: ooh ok that makes more since! So my program will be slightly different then.. Yeah I may just have to do an LOA, or something.. Idk... Although there are a lot of different positions with different hours at my job not many are just afternoons and weekends and the minimum is 20 hours.. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there! Thanks for the support- I need all the help I can get
@MRSF: oh that's awesome it only took 18 months! I have my AA but it will still take me about 3-3.5 years. I wish I had done it straight out of high school but I just had no idea what I wanted at that time.

BA in Communications. Did a little bit of everything (writing, editing, journalism, PR, graphic design, web design, photography) since I started at one school and finished at another. I feel like I have used parts of my degree in all of my jobs since it can be applied so broadly. I do wish I had a career that involved more writing and editing though.

My BS is in Forensic Science and I'm working on my PhD in genetics. I'm not sure if I will ever use my BS unfortunately.

I have a BA in history. I don't really use it. I mean I use critical thinking and research skills in my job (I work for a library system) and my job does require a degree but just any degree works for my employer.

BA: Journalism/Mass Communication, MS: Human-Computer Interaction. My BA comes in handy ina general way because good communication is always helpful in a business environment. But I use my master's every day as a software designer.

I have a BA in Art and a BA in Secondary Education. I do not teach art, so I don't 'technically' use my degree. But I own a Paint-Your-Own-Pottery Studio so my education in studio art is very beneficial!
blogger / persimmon / 1231 posts
@Mrs. Pen: both great areas! I worked in an ER as a nurse tech while in school and really enjoyed it. Not only do you see a lot, but so many of those skills you learn are helpful as a mom

I have a BA in French/Anthropology which I don't technically use (other than raising children bilingual) and a law degree which I do use, as I'm a prosecutor (like on Law and Order... Only not that exciting/sexy/dangerous). I also have most of a BS in biology and zoology.
But secretly I'd love to do graduate medicine and become a doctor!
My mom and sister are nurses. They love it

@Sparks: my sister is a nurse & did an ER intern last summer. She loved it so so so much!!!

I have a BA in English and anthropology, and a post-bach certification on behavior analysis. I currently work in special education.
@amandalynn: Are you in a SpEd program, specializing in autism? I'm currently looking at programs, hoping to eventually get my BCBA.

@pinkhorse: Super cool! I dream of doing pottery one day. Having your own studio like that sounds awesome.

@Mrs. Pen: I worked at a children's hospital in the ICU. Pretty intense stuff but I really loved it. I would only have 1-2 patients so I could really focus on them which was nice. And I really liked getting to form close bonds with the families too.
@Mrs. Jump Rope: yeah the ER is a fun place! That's definitely on my list for future jobs

Undergrad in studio art, masters in art therapy. I'm a SAHM so I don't use it right now. But we do make lots of art
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Sparks: that sounds amazing but I wonder if the sadness of it all (children in ICU) would get to me??!
@mrs.cookie: me too - not so secretly... I would have loved to go to med school as well!!
blogger / apricot / 378 posts
@deerylou: It's an online program - the actual name of my degree is "Autism and Developmental Disorders in Early Childhood" - so it's kind of a generalized developmental disabilities degree, but the focus is definitely on Autism.
I'd LOVE to get my BCBA someday - I kind of wish I would have gone into a more behavioral-geared grad school program, but this was a grant program so I'm getting it for free...so I can't really complain! I may end up going back someday and doing the additional courses I need to do my BCBA - I think it would be great to have!
Where did you get your behavior analysis certification?
apricot / 335 posts
@Mrs. Pen: my nursing sister is planning on it - so there's no reason you can't do both. I try to remind myself that there are a LOT of years left in my working life so there's no reason I can't have a few different careers
That said, I love my job and I feel like I am helping both individuals (victims) and the community as a whole. But the helping people aspect is why I'd love to be a dr.
My other dream job is to be a maternity concierge like Rosie Pope but I think there's insufficient demand in my small city!!
blogger / persimmon / 1231 posts
@Mrs. Pen: I was worried about that too, but children are so resilient. For every difficult moment there were 100 beautiful and inspiring ones. It's truly amazing what kids can bounce back from. And though there were tough times, it was also nice to learn how to be that support person for family members, and for the kids as well. But truly, more often than not kids get better and go home and it's a rewarding area to work in

Undergraduate masters in biochem (skipped the bachelors, done because it involved 3 research stints in different fields so I effectively got to try out different science jobs), and an MS in business administration (done because it was free through work). I don't fully use either degree but they are both useful and definitely got me the job I just accepted.
@Mrs. Pen: and @mrs.cookie: DH is doing that right now! He's in his third year. I not-so-secretly want to go to dental school (jealous of @yellowbird: ;)) but one massive load of debt is probably enough. (Plus now with a LO on the way it will never happen <sigh>....if I could go back to high school and do it all over again...but then I'd never have come to the US and met DH!)

BS in Civil Engineering. I use my degree at work. I go through phases of hating it and loving it.

@amandalynn: That sounds like an awesome deal - you can't go wrong with a grant funded program! What university are you going through? Will it enable you to work in a SpEd classroom, or do you plan to work with in behavior therapy?
I completed my BCaBA courses through Fitchburg State in Massachusetts. I did it through a distant learning program (I'm in California), but the classes were taught at my former work site, by a local psych professor.

I have my BS in psychology and a minor in communications/journalism. I don't actively use either in my job but I still like that I studied them!
@sarbear: me too! If I was smart I would have done something in computer science!

BA in Cognitive Psych, and an MBA.
I don't use my undergrad degree at all.
I thought I wanted to pursue psychology, but halfway through my undergrad I realized that it wasn't for me, but I didn't want to change majors so I just continued it. I find psychology so fascinating and like to psychoanalyze people for fun. Don't use it at all.

BA in Communications Advertising, but I switched to that my last year from Business - Marketing. I went backwards in some ways, and got an AA in Management of Apparel Manufacturing from a Fashion Design school after working a year.
I think most of the classes I took in undergrad apply to many different jobs and are useful and applicable to most jobs, but I never specifically got an Advertising job after college. Not for the lack of trying - it was after 9/11 and not a good industry at the time. I did use my Fashion AA degree from graduation till my last job before becoming a SAHM.
