Rescue dogs!!
Specifically pitbulls because they're so much in need of families. And my parents had an amazing ex-racing greyhound who just recently passed away.

I love mutts and just dogs in general. But I have a soft spot for pit bulls and any blockheaded dog. I also like the Swiss Mt. breeds and border collies/herding dogs.
Our dog is a rescue and we have no clue what he is. Here is a pic from our maternity shot - people tend to guess what breed(s) he is by their own familiarity with different types of dogs. He's the most awesome pain in the ass dog I've ever had. I love him to bits.
@Leialou: Oh how adorable!

I love my lazy, super affectionate bulldog. Also like English sheepdogs and Bernese mountain dogs and Newfounflands.

Spaniels are my favorite. I tend to like bigger than smaller dogs so I like the Springers, but I had a Cocker. They are very intelligent, gentle, and loyal dogs. On a plus note, they don't shed. I grew up with a large mix breed of dogs, labs, boxers, terriers, shepherds, and a spaniel's temperament is my favorite. I also have a soft spot for pitbulls.

@yoursilverlining: Yes! I was going to say my favorite is "mutt" too. I grew up with a shelter dog Jack Russel terrier mix (no idea what he was mixed with!). We rescued him when he was 1 and had him for 15 years. When we get a dog for our little family, it will likely be some sort of small-to-medium terrier mix shelter dog.

We have a mutt that's a big goober and I love him to pieces. I really love boxers and grew up with them so if I had to choose a breed, I'd love to get a boxer!

Labradors for ever and ever. We had 2 growing up, and our 9 year old just passed in February, so it's the first time ever I haven't had one in the house. They shed so horribly, but are just the best dogs.

@MK0180: Love the maternity pup photo! We had ours in our photo shoot too, although the black dog is super people anxious so we gave them a break after the first few

Golden retrievers! I always thought they were such a cliche dog and then I babysat a family who had one and I fell in love!
@msmug: Do you seriously have twin dogs too? This cracked me up.

@lavender: you know i have the same soft spot (even though my pugs are fawn)!

@lbee:yes!! haha we used to actually joke about how we should have twin babies since we have twin dogs... never thought in a million years it'd happen! But well.. here we are.. twin dogs that are 7 years old, and twin babes who are 7 months old

Here's a pic of Lucy and my brother's dog Bucky. Old English Sheepdogs are the best. There's one in our neighborhood we met at the park. I was practically falling over this dog since I missed my Lucy.

@cascademom: so cute! I want one! But I think my bulldog would freak out about being paired with a more active breed.

Vizsla, golden/labs, and Germans. We'd like a golden and a German Shepherd. We'll look to adopt a dog though rather than going to a breeder or anything like that.
We thought about Swissies, but they have a lot of health problems and they're huge! (I like my dogs to be dog sized...ankle biters won't do..but Swissies etc probably weigh more than me haha)

We have two Morkies (Maltese Yorkie mixes) and love them. Part of me feels guilty for not getting rescue dogs, but we were very careful about who we got them from. They're definitely not puppy mill dogs. They have great personalities and don't shed, and we've been very happy with them.
I will say that I hate German Shepards. I know they're not all bad, but our dogs have been attacked by 4 separate German shepards (different owners), every person I know with a small dog (seriously) has had at least one go after their dog(s), and my aunt's small dog was killed by her own German shepards. They're just too dangerous around small animals for me to trust them.

Love my Aussie!
She's chill and smart and so loving with my girls. She's always up for whatever we throw at her and is a wonderful companion.

@meredithNYC: yes! I love our bulldog too. He's so lazy (yet bounds like a puppy when you take him outside), cuddly, low maintenance and he is sooooo good with DD. I just love his temperament !

Bernese mountain dogs are far and away my favorite breed. So beautiful, loving, sweet and loyal. Love big dogs...
But the best big dog in a small dog package is our Cavalier King Charles spaniel!

@Littlebit: another minpin owner here! I have to admit I am a bit worried when LO comes. He can be such an a-hole lol. I swear every minpin I meet and hear about is the same. That being said, we love the nutball.

I love mix breeds! We have a rescue and he's the best dog I've ever known. He's "border collie x lab" but we're pretty sure he's border collie x black bear haha. He's the biggest most gentle giant ever my mom has a pyreneese x Bernese and she's amazing too.

I pretty much just clicked on this topic to look at all the pictures of dogs.
I could never decide on a favorite breed, though I've been completely gushing over corgis every time I see a picture of one lately.

I love my Shar Pei mix and Cocker Spaniel! Both are shelter dogs. Before my dogs, I loved Beagles and Pugs. Pugs aren't able to fly on planes and they are small dogs... small bladders.
I do wish my Shar Pei was more the size of my Cocker Spaniel. I love holding him in my arms. Someone needs to figure out how to shrink my Shar Pei!
Old photo from the holidays.
Cocker Spaniel now has a cool Mohawk.

We like bigger breeds. As a kid, my family had labs and they were awesome dogs. When I married DH, he had adopted an Aussie and together we adopted a pit mix. They are both great dogs with other animals (we have frequent visitors that bring pets) and LO.

@Charm54: @meredithNYC: Threadjack, sorry... Have you guys had any health problems with your bullys? I'm sooooo tempted to get one after dreaming of 'em for the past 10 years...but some of the health problems you hear about have me a little worried.

I love wacky dogs like my mutt Lucy. Well, and my Yorkie Ellie.

@Turd Ferguson: nothing major, luckily! However, she has a lot of recurring issues like UTI's (wtf, right?) and allergies that make for somewhat frequent vet visits.

I've always had a soft spot for labs and retrievers - a black lab was my first dog when I was three and he was SO good with me and we had a special bond. They are consistently a very sweet dog and good with kids.
I also love huskies and recently saw a samoyed and they are beautiful and see sweet!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@Turd Ferguson: no health problems for us, he's almost 5 and the only vet bill we've had is regular yearly shots.
He is a bit taller and more active than most bulldogs though...the vets always comment on how healthy he is and his breathing especially. I think we just lucked out. I've heard of some horror stories, mostly online though. The bulldogs in my local bulldog group haven't had any major issues that I know of.
Bulldogs really are the sweetest! A gentle, 60lb lapdog lol

@cascademom: so pretty! I love the puppy cut on them! We kept ours short too because we were in FL and he had skin issues.

Boxers!
If I ever convince DH to get another dog, it will be a rescue, but we both have a preference for short-haired jowly dogs. Mutts that fit that description are great, too!

Rescue/mixed breeds for us! We have a beagle terrier and a big yorkie terrier. Sweetest lovable and most patient dogs...! They need to be groomed!!
We will likely end up a a cocker spaniel or lab mix later on in life as those were Dh's childhood dogs.

Big dogs, especially mutts... Rescue dogs, especially Pits, have a soft place in my heart.

@T.H.O.U.: The puppy cut is great on sheepdogs. They get so matted without it. During the summer, the buzz cut keeps them cool.

@Mrs. Jacks: Oooh Rubies are lovely red heads! I want a black and tan next truthfully but then again I want them all too
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@Mrs. Chocolate: the breeder had a Black and Tan, but that pup was clearly show quality where ours is kind of borderline, depending on whether his white blaze fills in completely... So we would have had to show for sure with the Black and Tan..

Loooove me some pointers. We rescued ours without any idea what she was, but they are the best digs ever. Sweet, cuddly, playful, crazy, and adore children. They are my favorite!
