Holy moly. This poll makes me feel poor! That's what I get for being a sahm I guess.....

@artbee: Yeah I guess I should have added a few more options for the 200k+ crowd...

Daang, I'm poor In my defense, I've only just finished grad school and been living on my stipend

DH works for a small business owner in our church & I work very part time from home for my moms ministry... we bring in just under 30k a year. Lets just say I've gotten very thrifty!.. Really though for us it's worth me being able to be home with the kids & I homeschool G as well!
I broke the gross income silence! tehe

@runsyellowlites: I'll continue the breaking of the silence!
We are WAY under 30k. Like way. But we have a free place to live, and our organization gives a lot of perks (insurance, education funding, etc).

@TurtleDoves: @littlek: Yup, veeerrrryyy regional. Sadly for me living in a very expensive area.

@TurtleDoves: youa re right--totally depends! I think we make maybe.....50% more in our new state, but we are actually poorer, in terms of how much it costs to live. We're going to be seriously scraping by when LO comes and I have to pay for childcare. boooo. We should've stayed in Texas, where everything is cheaper!

@Arden: We were the year before last.... DH got a nice raise this last year & for part of the year I had a supplementary client (it doubled my income). I'm sure we'll drop down this year closer to 25k since I no longer have that client!

@runsyellowlites: If our organization didn't provide the perks it does, we couldn't survive on our stipend. We make like 15k a year. It will increase slightly next year, but still.
The insurance, continuing education paid in full, etc - makes it possible.

@Arden: That's so awesome they have those resources! I need thrifty tips from YOU... maybe then we could have a savings!

We're on just one income so we're probably classified under lower middle class.

We're in one, mid-range bracket now, but will be entering another if and when I go part-time, or take a break from working for the first year.

Interesting how there is a fairly even spread between $60k and $180k (which I think it a pretty big range).

Since being a sahm our income has halved, but I will happily take that pay cut to see those cute smiles day! I will take that as my compensation for not being in the 1mil category

Part of the reason is age and work experience as well...when I started working, I was making $35,000 a year. That was almost 16 years ago now.

@TurtleDoves: agree! we are not rich by any means b/c we live in Boston!

There is a lot to consider though since this poll is "Gross"..
DH and I make 190K between the two of us. We pay about $55K/year in taxes, DH pays about $35K/year in student loans and $15K in paying off CC debt from law school. That brings us down to Net $85K per year...half what the gross number looks like!
Definitely not saying we dont live comfortably and have certain splurges we enjoy - but gross salary is a deceiving number I think!
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@looch: agreed completely. If this was when DH and I were newbies to the work force it would be $80K gross...half what it is now after 8 years of work for me, 4 years + 3 years of law school for DH. Time makes a difference!

The cost of living in my state (and area of the country) is pretty high so it doesn't go as far as it might in other regions!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@Mrs D: yeah, i mean, it's hard to make any sense out of these numbers because there are so many other factors at play. It's only "relevant" if the time period is the same. Like, what was your income when you first started working, or what was it with 5 years of experience. To me, in these polls, it's also not about the cost of living in your area.
