He had 2 weeks paid the first time. His company increased it to 6 weeks paid last year, so he's taking the full 6 weeks this time!

One of the only good things about where he works is they are generous with leave time.

He's an engineer and works for a large adult beverage company.

I'm Canadian, so we get 9 months of parental leave combined that we can split however we want. I took it all because my job pays me 93% of my salary. His job, I think, would have paid him his full salary for up to 3 months, and then if he'd taken more it would be EI. (technically neither of our jobs pay it all, we get unemployment insurance that covers about 50% and our jobs would top it up)

My husband isn't technically covered by FMLA, but his work still follows it, so he can take up to 12 weeks. All of which he will be taking. 4 weeks with me and the baby and then the remainder when I go back to work.

I get paid 50% of my salary while on disability, so 6/8 weeks not the full FMLA 12. I'm surprised by how many men don't take any leave. Yeah, I get it's unpaid, but isn't the norm for women to be unpaid too, besides disability (in US that is)?

No such thing at either of our jobs. DH took a couple days PTO (I think he gets 2-3 days 'family sick days' and used 1 holiday with DD.

He took a week of sick time. He could take FMLA but my salary won't cover everything.

DH took 2 weeks off using sick leave when DD1 was born. He is a teacher and will take 1-2 weeks sick leave this time as well (both times also protected by FMLA) if baby stays in until school starts. If baby is born early and in the NICU, he may take his 2 weeks after I go back to work until we can send her to daycare. No paid paternity leave and no paid maternity leave for me, either.

He got one month off at full pay but ended up taking 6 weeks off (used PTO for the additional two weeks).

My husband technically gets only fmla. He took two weeks of vacation with our first. Honestly, no one at his firm takes full fmla. No one takes more than two weeks unless there is a medical complication. He works in finanace and the general concensus is that you will basically be passed over for promotions and your longevity at the firm and commitment will be called into question. It sucks but that's pretty much how it is unless you work at a European bank(and even they can be stingy with dads)

3 months at full pay, on top of his usual bank of vacation, sick, and holidays.

He can take up to 112 days (including weekends though- it's 4 28 day schedules) in the first year but doesn't get paid anything outside of his sick/comp/vacation hours that he has saved. For my first he took 3 weeks and for the second it was 3+ months- but he worked OT and saved sick/vacation hours for years to do that. This time it'll be less.

Last time he saved a week of vacation days and then since I had a c-section and most of that week was spent in the hospital he just told them he was taking another week (they had previously expressed to him to "take what you need") and they paid him for it.

I have no clue what his situation will be next time but I am going to assume he'll have to use vacation time if he wants any paid.

@RonjaL7: that's so weird about the adoption time. I'm guessing there's a state law in play that forced them to do that but nothing for a non-adoption paternity leAve?

With my first two, dh was only able to take one week unpaid. This time he has a better job but is still only able to take a week. It will be paid but he has to use vacation time. Also, he is in sales and can't afford to miss much longer than that without missing opportunities.

In my opinion, one week isn't enough. Especially after my first when I had a c-section, I was so not ready for him to go back to work.

In Canada we can split 35 weeks of parental leave between parents on top of 15 weeks maternity leave. This is paid through EI if you are eligible. In our case I will be taking the whole leave as I make half of what my husband makes, so we need his full income.

Wow I think my dh's leave is super generous at 6 weeks paid but looks like there is a great variety of decent leaves. I'm shocked!

Nothing with the first baby, two days unpaid with the second.

There is nothing formal since he works for a small family office. He took 4 days off (paid). He could have taken more time I guess but I think he felt pressure to go back to work as soon as possible.

DH is a SAHD so I guess nearly 5 years now.

I have never had a paid maternity leave (public employee) just FMLA and whatever PTO I had scraped together.

He qualifies for FMLA and before kids we thought he would use it, but now we realize that would be extremely frowned upon at his workplace and it would be very hard financially (esp since I'm unpaid too, on FMLA) . So he takes about 2 weeks or so, depending on sick time and school schedule.

My husband works for a small company that isn't covered by FMLA. The owners both had their kids before starting the firm so my husband was the first employee (male or female) to have a child born while working there. So in addition to no FMLA, they also had no set parental leave policy. But he works in a commission based business and is one of their top producers, so they basically said "do whatever you want, we'll pay you". Both of our kids were born the week of Thanksgiving which is a slow time in their industry. With our first he was totally off work, not taking calls, etc for a week. Then he worked from home the next two weeks, and then we were approaching Christmas/New Years week so he was sporadically in the office but still home most of the time through the new year. With our second, we had some issues when I was immediately post partum (jaundiced baby with lots of weight loss, and both my husband and I got strep with my husband's case requiring an ER visit) so my dad came to help and stayed for 3 weeks with my mom also being here for the last of those three weeks. Since my dad was around and I had a better hang of things as a second time mom, my husband started going back in to the office about 1.5 weeks after the baby was born, but again was always available to me and able to work from home whenever I wanted him to through the new year.
