In the past we've done all gold ornaments, and we've had some ginormous trees so we have tons of ornaments. Now that we have kids, I want a more rainbow tree, but that means buying a lot of new ornaments!
I really want to start a tree tradition and save ornaments year after year though.
Does your tree have a theme?

Our tree doesn't have a theme. It has white lights and some colored balls as the base. The rest of the ornaments are sentimental. We buy a couple new unique ones each year. I'm looking forward to getting some more this year!

It's kind of a mix of all kinds of ornaments. We have the traditional red and green balls, plus some gold. Then we have lots of ornaments from my childhood and some that we've gotten since we were married. We don't have any ornaments from DH's childhood because my MIL never gets them out for us to have (and we always forget to ask)... though she wouldn't mind. The tree is the only part of Christmas decorating that I don't mind being a bit tacky

We never did themed trees growing up. Our trees were a colorful mess! 
ornaments we made at school, classic colorful balls, colorful lights, tinsel (i LOVED tinsel!).
We probably won't get a Christmas tree this year, but will definitely buy one next year.

Our tree's theme is no theme. It is a miss match of all different ornaments and colors. Always have just white lights though.

Right now we have kind of an earthy theme - acorns, fruit, birds etc. but we also have random other special ornaments. I like the classic red and gold and silver and I like a lighter green mixed in - oh and always white lights!

All of our ornaments are sentimental. It was that way when I was a kid, too - and I think it makes for a great idea for gifts. That way the gift is something you enjoy seeing every Christmas, but don't have to have on display in your house for the rest of the year.
When I was a kid we would take out the ornaments and decorate the tree together, each taking out our favorites, the handmade ones from so-and-so, etc. I hope to carry this tradition with DS.

I love gold, cream, and green. I decorate my tree with white lights and gold ornaments.
However, I've lately been falling in love with plum purple ornaments... so we shall see.

the last two years, i've been collecting silver and gold ornaments and gone with that kind of theme. we have a tiny place with a small tree (maybe 4-5 feet tops) so i have it pretty filled already.
ETA: i have all the ornaments that i received over the years as well, from grandma, aunts, etc. and those are a rainbow of mishmash, which is what my parents' tree is. we just don't even have enough room to put them all up on DH and my tree, so i only put up the pretty ones. when we have DD, i'm sure my tree will get bigger and i'll put up every disney/santa/hallmark ornament i have.

I do white lights and a collection of handmade ornaments. It seems to end up mostly red and neutrals. I have clear and cherry red glass balls, but it'll be a couple years before I get them out again, I think.

I wish my trees could be elegant and in a color theme, but nope, no color scheme. We try and collect an ornament whenever we travel, and then we've hosted a number of holiday parties over the last few years and I request that all our guests bring us an ornament. I love seeing what they come up with!
Plus we have a random assortment that I buy after Christmas (on sale!) every year... so yeah, nothing matches! I love unwrapping my mishmash of ornaments every year

We use white lights and gold, cream, and red ball ornaments (some glittery, some not). We also have several ornaments that we've picked up over the years, but we try to keep our tree really simple.

White lights with a totally random, sentimental batch of ornaments. I pick out a new ornament every year, whatever I find that I really like. White lights with mixed ornaments makes for a great balance between traditional and fun!

The theme of crazy. I've been collecting ornaments for the past couple of years. Just one or two. It's a schmozle of ornaments from places I've been and pretty things I found.

My little sister's tree is hilarious.
She has this really old threadbare artificial tree she got out of a dumpster in Albania, and it's broken in half. She could get another one, but she says she feels sorry for this one and she wants to give it a happy home.
She has it duct-taped together (really!), but the top half tips over at a weird angle. She uses bright LED purple, red, green, and blue flashing lights, plus these little yellow "gift box" lights. She then covers it in that really cheap ugly tinsel, in every possible color.
Then, topped with a million cheap ornaments (many of which are cracked or chipped) and tops with a very crooked flashing neon lighted star. Oh, and the lights sing these high pitched off key Christmas songs in Chinese. I'm serious.
It's SO her. It's a sad little comical tree, neurotic and oh so endearing. I love it.
I really need to see if I can find a photo of it...

We alternate each year because DH likes colored lights and I like white lights. On my year we have white lights with silver, light cream, and red ornaments (mostly glass balls). On his year we have colored lights and all sorts of ornaments. I call it our "fun" tree and mine is our "pretty" tree.

DH refuses to do anything but "traditional" colors so ours are white, red, lime green and gold/silver. Then we are also going to collect keepsake ornaments, one for every year.

We have a tradition of buying ornaments from everywhere we've traveled, so we have a pretty sizable stash now of keepsake ornaments. I like homey/ mishmash trees.

Family. It has our ornaments from when we were kids on it, we buy a new ornament every year and we will buy our lo ornaments, as well. We have white twinkly lights on it.

@mediagirl: I like that you called your theme family. I might have to steal that. Growing up I got an ornament every year from my parents and grandparents. My parents buy us one for our anniversary every year now (Nov). DH has all his ornaments from childhood as well. It is so fun remembering them every year when we put them on the tree. I can't wait to carry on that tradition with our LO.

Last year we got a new tree. My small 5ft tree I grew up with was over flowing with ornaments after DS and I got married. His step mom had given him a new keepsake every year and marked it with the year so he would know when he got it. Fun to watch how it when from teddy bears & trains to golf & computers. I LOVE decorating for Christmas every item has a memory. We have no theme other than switching from white to colored lights every other year & use the same silver garland I've had for the last 5 years.

lol our tree has no color scheme or theme. Most of it is my family's ornaments from growing up. We started a tradition last year where we'd buy a special ornament every year for our family. It's a hodge podge of colors and styles and I love it.

@Arden: OMG the singing lights. In Ecuador people would always use these, and it drove me BATTY!!!
We will be at my parents' home for Christmas, so we probably won't do our own tree. The ornaments we do have a pretty eclectic, so no theme.
My parents always had two trees: the pretty one in the living room with all the nice ornaments, and the one tucked away out of sight upstairs with all the ugly kid ornaments, haha!
