I just use my iPhone... but I've been thinking about getting a dSLR and taking lessons. Just because I think Mrs. Bee would like it if I could take pictures for the blog.
What kind of camera do you have?

@oahujeni: I asked for the Canon Rebel T3i for Christmas, based on people talking about it on here.

@Foodnerd81: I was a little overwhelmed with it at first, but once I got the hang of it, it became very easy to use. I paid for a class which I hated (the teacher spoke about himself the whole time and what a great photographer he is blah blah blah.) Now I use the site Digital Photography School and read the articles on there and follow the message boards. It's free and you'll learn so much!

@chopsuey119: duuuuude I am sooo jealous.
@mrbee: I thought Mrs. Bee had an DSLR? You don't share cameras?
I have a Nikon D80. It's okay, I like having an DSLR but mine is just so so. I want to get a better lens for sure!

I use my iPhone a lot! Also have a Nikon digital camera, nothing fancy. I would love to have a DSLR but they seem so confusing.

@mrbee: it mostly just takes some playing around with it I started out just using automatic settings and then ventured into experimenting with manual settings.
Actually I just emailed my SIL who is a professional photographer and she is going to give me a few more pointers when I see her at Christmas. I was doing really well until Cobi started crawling and moving every second - now it's so much more difficult!

@Mrs. Pen: It's just not something that interests me! But I do plan to learn it, so Bee has more pictures of her with the kids.

Nikon D5000 and a Canon S95. But I'm the one that mostly uses the DSLR b/c my husband doesn't know how to use anything else besides the Auto setting. I taught him how to adjust the white balance and use the P setting when the kids are on the move. It's an easier setting to use. He's still getting comfortable with it and I'm sure with practice he'll be a pro at it soon enough!

Man, just the iPhone right now. I reeeeally want to get a fancy-schmancy one, leaning towards the T3i. I'd LOVE to get into photography and be able to pull off a picture that isn't instagrammed...

@Foodnerd81: would you want to get the t4i? my sister just got it... I'm not familiar with the t3i (I have a t2i), but the t4i has a pretty cool touch screen that you can pop out and it's noticeably light in weight for a dslr.

Canon t1i I believe it is. Lowest end model dslr for canon. Got it as a wedding present from a friend. We also just got he Nikon 5100. I've been lazy and haven't used much. I took lessons briefly as well and it helped a bit. We've been using our iPhones a lot lately. That's awesome that you want to learn to take family photos. It's hard work trying to capture all the memorable moments sometimes and I feel so guilty when I miss out on those opportunities.

I have a Canon T3i with the kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8 lens. LOVE that thing. Im getting better at using the manual settings from reading tons on the internet. I probably should take a class though.

@mrbee: I am hopeless with shooting in manual (also not very interested) but the automatic settings on the DSLRs are so good that you can just fake it. I don't think it's necessary to learn all the f stops and everything else. But learning about composition is important. I think that's why DH takes terrible photos and I can take good ones, just on automatic settings. It's bc I can make good compositions. And I suppose knowing a little bit about lighting doesn't hurt either.

I have a Nikon D3000. I like it but I don't have any experience with other DSLRs.

@NYCaliMama: I did see they came out with the T4i, but I haven't looked at what the differences are. I know I wanted the 3 over the 2 based on reviews I saw online. I figure if I don't know any better with the 4, and the t3i is cheaper, I'm fine? I've never used a DSLR so I probably will be using very basic things anyway for a while.
I am planning to get the for Dummies book for whichever model I get to try and teach myself then checking out online tutorials and such. If I get it for Christmas, I've got more than 6 months to get a handle on it before my subject arrives

We just got a fancy compact with a gazillion features that I haven't figured out - the Sony DSC-RX100. We splurged, but the pictures are amazing and it's easier and lighter to carry around that a DSLR.

@JerricaBenton: i have the same one too!
After having a dslr, i can't go back to a regular point and shoot. I find that it's almost necessary when taking pictures of babies because they move around so much.

I really want a Sony NEX7, but they come at a (very steep) price, so I settled on a Panasonic GF3 instead. The GF1 would be my second "dream" choice, after the NEX7.

@Foodnerd81: I see. My sister hardly knows anything about dslr's either but she is taking amazing shots already! you can't go wrong with the t3i, but I do love the new features on the t4i. I usually hate touch screens on cameras, but they did well with this new feature, I have to say. The "handheld night mode" (which I think is new) is awesome too. I don't know what the price differences are exactly though so yeah, budget would be a big factor. I found a good article comparing the two: http://www.lightandmatter.org/2012/equipment-reviews/canon-t4i-vs-t3i-whats-the-difference/

@NYCaliMama: Oh thanks for the article! I don't' know if DH already got it for me but I'm checking this out!

I have a canon rebel. I'm not sure which model it is though.

I have a Nikon d80. We thought about getting a new one, but can't really justify it since I don't know how to use the manual mode. Just recently bought a book though, which I hope will help!

I have a point and shoot I keep in my purse, its a canon and it's decent.
I also have a Canon Rebel XS. I have been shooting manual and editing some pictures myself.. I am really happy with how they turn out. I can't stand using the flash any more and just leaving it on auto!
I used Mrs. Bees tutorials for help as well!

I mostly just use my iPhone but I have just a basic digital camera too, not even sure what type, a Sony something or another.
grapefruit / 4049 posts
@Foodnerd81: no problem. i love the canon rebels (am on my second one!)... I want the t4i now, but can't justify it since my t2i is still working great. have fun with whichever camera you decide!

Canon 5 d mark II. Love it but I would only spend serious money on a camera if u r really into photography. I am so its worth it to me. A good lens will go a long way though and avoid kit lenses. Canon rebel is great camera to start with.

We have a canon t2i. I'm still playing w/ it but love it! Even w/ no clue what I'm doing it takes way better pics than our point and shoot powershot.

I have my brother's D3000, but I really want to upgrade. Especially now that I've looked at that link on the Canon T4i! Better save up!
