I have an HMO plan through DH's work...I need a referral for a specialist. I will feel silly telling my primary care dr that I want to see the dermatologist for anti aging stuff!

No additional health insurance at all, only what we pay for through our taxes. This will have to change when our LO arrives.

We have a plan called Open Access.
Even when we had the HMO last year, we didn't need referrals from our primary doctor. I called 3 times to confirm, lol.

@looch: Nice. I just called and they lifted my expired (by one month) dermatologist referral and let me make an appointment!

PPO through my husband's work. We do not need referrals to see docs like derms, luckily!

@Mae: Nice! I can only make my appointments for the eye doctor and OBGyn!

@autumnlove: lame. This is the last year my husband's work is offering a PPO and next year we're being forced into an HSA… hoping the rules on this don't change!

we have a BCBS PPO through mr. bird's employer, but we have to select our new plan by the end of the month so that may change.

We both have BCBS but I have an HMO through my employer and DH has a PPO through his employer, which is free for him. Adding me to his PPO would have been more expensive than me going through my own employer.

I have been hanging on to my HMO and want to keep it as long as there are good doctors from which to choose. I'm picky about doctors even though I don't have any medical needs beyond regular annual well woman exam and annual blood work. I like having set low copays for all things. I have always paid out of pocket for my annual dermatologist so I don't know how it would work if I went through my insurance. Good luck, lady!

Cigna. I can't remember/don't know or care if it's PPO or HMO. I don't need referrals for anything. It's a great plan!

We have a High Deductible plan through my employer, we don't require a referral to see a specialist. It was the same with my previous HMO plan which sadly is no longer available.

I have grad student health insurance through my university. For anything besides my ob/prenatal care, I have to go to campus health services to get care or a referral. I like having health services there for things that I need to see someone asap, like flu, but it's a pain for more routine stuff. Like, I had an annual gyn check up there once and they're used to seeing undergrads more regularly so it felt super awkward--an 18 year old worrying about stds is very different than a 30 year old who's ttc!
