OMG, that was hilarious! I get this too! "No, where are your people from?" "Where is your blood from?"
The first time I went to meet DH's mom's side of the family they bought me sushi. Just me--everyone else had salmon and salad. Talk about awkward. They even dug through their kitchen to look for a pair of chopsticks for me =) DH was sorta mortified.

That is hilarious! I get that all the time.
At a baseball game, a "white" hotdog vendor started talking to me in Korean. I said excuse me? He said you know what I said. I said no I don't know, because I'm Chinese American. He said he's dated enough Koreans to know what one looks like and he thought I was faking. Cray cray.

@tysonja: I politely ate my grocery store sushi with my chopsticks and agreed it was "fabulous". It's a good story to share with friends =)

@tysonja: It was very sweet that they tried to make me feel comfortable but their approach was all wrong. I still giggle when I think about it =D

@keiki_mama: aww that's kinda cute, then
more mortifying for your poor dh -- esp if you guys were still dating when it happened?
i'm asian and have dated (and now am married) to non-asians, and although that's never happened to me, i can still relate a bit! hehe

I am Chinese and have totally had someone tell me that my english was accented and that they didn't believe I was born in Canada.
I was pretty offended but the man who said this was in his late 70s and also told me that he was dying of something (forgot what exactly) and only had a grade 8 education. So I just nodded and didn't say anything else. Awkward.

I went to the ER awhile ago because i was experiencing pain and had difficulty breathing. When the ER doctor saw me and asked me questions, I couldn't even speak due to pain. He turned to my non-Asian husband and asked him if I understood English. I was so mad, but I couldn't speak!

I'm Filipino and MIL (who is married to a Filipino) loves to talk down about Filipinos around me. She especially loves to say that "Tagalog is such an ugly language and sounds like a bunch of chickens clucking" but Portuguese is so beautiful (which she unfortunately does not speak nor understand). I usually just grin and bear it but since having DS it hasn't been so easy to bite my tongue! Graciousness is lost on her so I wonder sometimes if I should bother being gracious at all. Sigh.
