I was just reading the other thread about black babies being cheaper to adopt and I was surprised that the adoption costs in the article ranged from 18K to 35K. I had no idea adoption was that expensive. What exactly makes it so costly?

I'm not sure but I'm genuinely curious too. Especially since on top of that you have to pay airfare and many personal/travel expenses!

Probably because a lot of people need to get paid to make it legal and safe?

I would assume that most of the placement fees come from legal fees. I'm not entirely sure why it costs so much, besides that they can charge that much.

I'm not sure, but I would imagine a lot goes to legal fees and various places in order to get paperwork together. Plus, if you go through an agency you're paying the agency for their time and resources.

In some adoptions, you are responsible for paying the mother's medical fees. So all prenatal care, birth etc. comes out of your pocket.

So a huge part of expenses is advertising to birth parents and counseling birth parents. Our adoption included all birth mother living expenses. Most people see a list of charges and think that's it... but then they get slapped with birth mother expenses afterward. Ours also included medical which is often not included.
The only thing that wasn't covered was our legal dealing with ICWA, but that was a little expense for us since the tribe had no prevailing interest given that grandfather was adopted into a white family. (sadly)
