I just moved overseas and am trying to be a good ambassaor for where I'm from (gosh, that sounds so dorky but I hope you know what I mean). A lot of times, people from SA leave and then slate it so I'm trying to spread some SA love haha. Got me thinking about what I want people to know about JHB.
What makes you proud about your hometown?

Absolutely nothing. I'm originally from a small town in upstate NY. If you mention it to people from the area, they would have a "yikes" reaction. When people from the city ask, i usually name the large-ish city near where i grew up.

I have mixed feelings about our state. I don't like winter or sports or heavy drinking or many other things it is known for, but it also has some real secret (and not so secret) gems: lots of artists, beautiful rolling hills and farmland, gorgeous bluffs along the Mississippi, family values, an excellent university... really great local food!

I'm from Quebec, and honestly I'm not too proud of that lol. I like the culture in Quebec, but the people and politics there are mostly awful.

Maybe my brain isn't working yet on this Monday morning, but what are SA and JHB?
I'm from a smaller town that is a township near Cleveland Ohio, and now live in Columbus Ohio. I liked/like both. I liked the area I grew up in because it felt pretty rural (moreso at the time, it's been a bit built up) and it was a nice area to grow up in-- running in the fields and the woods and going 4-wheeling and whatnot, but we were still only like 45 minutes from Cleveland so it really didn't feel like "the middle of nowhere" at all. Now in Columbus I feel like it's just a really nice place to live. It's more a collection of suburbs than a real "city" and I like that the cost of living is low and the people are nice but it still has enough of a city vibe in terms of good shopping and restaurants and theaters.

I'm proud of my small farm town that I grew up, I say it with pride when people ask where I grew up. Theer's nothign "great" about it besides nice people, most joke about the 11 churches we had for 3000 people

@bunnymommy: Ah! I've spent too much time on the boards... I see SA I only think "sperm analysis" and I was quite sure you weren't from somewhere named that. Also, south africa is totally on my bucket list! A township is just what they sometimes call very small towns in the US. One stop light, one gas station, one convenience store, and 2 churches sort of place

@bunnymommy: I live in Ontario now, but I lived in Quebec for most of my life. I didn't hate living there as a kid, actually, but as an adult I find a lot I... disagree with lol.

About where I'm originally from (Northern CA) - I feel like growing up there gave me an appreciation for nature and the environment. Plus there are just so many beautiful places there!

@pui: That's so interesting! Do you speak french? It's hard when you grow up and start to understand all the politics and stuff hey? DH and I had the same problem with SA

I grew up in the desert of West Texas and I will say that some of the most beautiful sunsets you'll ever see in your life, can be seen in West Texas.

@bunnymommy: it was okay growing up there but the town has seriously gone downhill. The high school has a very high dropout rate, there's a lot of poverty/rundown areas, etc. and i just didnt like small town life overall. No, i would never move back.
