If you have a deck or patio in your backyard what kind of material is it?
We would really love redwood or some kind of engineered planking. But sadly those are likely out of budget. I think we'll probably do pressure treated and stain it?
ETA: we have concrete around the inground pool. But between that and the house is a big grassy area we plan to build a deck late spring for out door dining/entertaining, etc

Our deck is made Trex (composite wood). I like how it doesn't need painting, but our contractors weren't clear with us that all the rails and such would be regular wood and do need painting. Not sure what we would've chose if we had understood that.

@Mrs.Someone: Jelly! Did they give you a (material) cost comparison of Trex vs pressure treated wood?

@locavore_mama: I don't think so, if I remember right they just told us it wouldn't be much more expensive. If for some reason you do get Trek, use a color the same as the rails so you don't have to paint!

@Mrs.Someone: we won't be doing railings. We're going to have a bi level deck with built in storage seating/planters at the perimeter and steps leading down to the second (first?) level then down to the concrete patio.
ETA: But the thought of re-staining every few years is a PITA!

@Mrs.Someone: @littlek: hm. So on HD's website they're claiming Trex is competitively priced with outdoor deck lumber. But of course, no pricing online! Will have to take a trip to HD to check it out!

We have trex and white composite railing (I forget the brand). Our contractor wanted us to do some sort of wood railing, but we were adamant that we wanted maintenance free! I think that there are about 4 levels of trex that vary widely in price. The two most basic colors ( they have at HD) are prob still 2-3x as expensive as pressure treated though...

@locavore_mama: We have pressure-treated wood. Actually I think it's a mix...when DH sanded the whole thing last summer he discovered that part of it is a nicer wood. Apparently the previous owner did the deck in stages, because it's huge. We'd love to replace it with Trex but it looks great sanded and restained so we'll keep it!

Pressure treated wood. We built a few levels and its built off of the existing concrete slab that we'd love to replace one day, but for now its perfect. We wanted composite but no way was it in the budget with as much ground as we covered!

@Sparkler: yes, that's what I'm thinking. I haven't done residential architecture in a while but from what I remember engineered is a lot more expensive than pressure treated!
@beachbee: yes! We're building a fairly large bi level deck....so yeah.

Pressure treated wood, and I hate it. It's only 3 years old and it's buckled and the rails all need repainting. Half the decks in our association all need to be replace, but they won't spend the money and just keep repairing them. I will never put in a deck that's not composite, this stuff just sucks.

@locavore_mama: I'm not sure how big of a deck you want, but our deck was not cheap. I think we spent about $15k. We had another deck built (smaller for our rental property) and it was significantly cheaper.
