I have to take one on Friday and am at a loss for what to bring - my go to is enchiladas but this family requested no Mexican food and nothing spicy!

@coopsmama: One of the few friends who brought me food after LO was born, brought a Greek Quinoa salad, similar to this:

I loved it!

I would take muffins and a fruit tray. I always found breakfast the hardest when LO was a newborn!

Here are my go-to things to bring:
- Fresh cut/peeled fruit in bite size pieces.
- Peeled hard-boiled eggs.
- Individually wrapped breakfast burritos or sandwiches.
- Marinated raw meat frozen in a Ziploc bag to thaw and grill with a bagged salad or a steamer bag of frozen veggies and a side of storebought mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes.
- Muffins or lactation cookies.
- A meal kit (like a jar of Indian curry simmer sauce, 2 cans of chickpeas, a can of coconut milk, and 2 cups of dry basmati rice in a Ziploc bag with instructions).
- One pot meals like dirty rice or jambalaya or chicken noodle bake.
- Pulled pork from the crockpot with buns, pickles, coleslaw, and potato chips. Maybe some beer!
With any of this, I ALWAYS bring paper plates, plastic silverware, and paper napkins.

I made my friend a simple lasagne but my husband and I accidentally ate it before bringing it over. Oops! I went to the local farmers market and got her another lasagne (not homemade by me, but still homemade by someone!) plus a family sized meat pie. Bringing it over tomorrow, I hope it goes well! I know in the first week home I liked meals that could be heated up and eaten straight from the dish, usually with the baby in a carrier, standing at the kitchen counter.

I loved it when my mum/MIL made little chicken schnitzels (with tenders), mashed potato and peas. they last for a few days, and add some wraps/salad that can turn them into lunch the next day.

I just made a ground turkey shepherd's pie tonight, and I'd definitely bring that. Easy to make, easy to reheat, and healthy! I used cauliflower instead of potatoes for the topping (and I've seen recipes use sweet potatoes too).
I used this as a base recipe, but veered off on my own - http://www.rachaelraymag.com/recipes/rachael-ray-magazine-recipe-search/kid-recipes/ground-turkey-shepherd-s-pie - used frozen veggies and chopped some onions, so virtually no prepwork... had different seasonings on hand so just played around. Kept the bacon though!

Chicken noodle soup? Or chicken rice soup! Fresh cut veggies and fruit, lasagna.... Mmmmmmm....

I made a version of this with spinach instead of broccoli rabe, since I can't get broccoli rabe here.

People have been bringing us meals for almost two weeks. We've had fried chicken, homemade Mac and cheese, green beans, tuna noodle casserole, chicken pot pie, lasagna, Mexican tortillas, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken Parmesan pasta with veggies. So yummy! I love not cooking or grocery shopping, lol!

I usually do lasagna, although one friend is gluten free and one was dairy free right from the get-go so I did sesame chicken and fried rice for them. I like lasagna because it freezes well, though.

We had lots of yummy food but there was so much pasta! My favorite was a friend who brought a roasted chicken with a side of mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, and a chocolate cake for dessert!

I'm useless because my go to is freezer burritos! But when my son was born a gf brought us baked sweet potatoes stuffed with ground beef, bell peppers, black beans and corn. Topped with cheese. They were SO good. She also brought soup and bread whih was super yummy.

Dude, I would eat anything as long as I don't have to make it haha! Is she BF? If so def make some lactation cookies for her! I had DD in Dec and I appreciated warm soup.

I've been doing a dinner tray, easy to freeze/reheat. Then a big container of salad and diced veggies to add to it. And sometimes some muffins

I took this sun dried tomato mozzarella chicken pasta and some chocolate cake to a friend a few weeks ago:

My personal list of freezer meals to make myself include: breakfast sandwiches+burritos, thai curry, meatballs, soups, chicken parm bake, calzones, indian curry, taquitos, and some burger patties. Any of which would be a nice change from the usual "new mom food" depending on what kind of time you have. I think the calzones would be especially nice. My friend wanted a dinner pasta that was toddler friendly

Last thing I brought was chili from the crockpot and freezer dinner rolls with instructions.
The chili is not very spicy at all:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/chicken-and-two-bean-chili/detail.aspx
And I have subbed ground turkey/beef for the chicken
things that require minimal effort to heat and can freeze well seem to be best.

I usually make something baked and pick up takeout when I visit people with newborns. I'm lazy!

What about breakfast burritos? They're great to keep in the fridge and pop one in the toaster oven for a quick, protein-rich meal. I love this recipe, though I usually make it vegetarian (the salsa verde is not spicy at all):
breakfast sausage—20 or so links, taken out of the casing, or you could use bulk.
2 onions—diced
1 red pepper—diced
garlic—2 cloves finely chopped
potatoes— bake them then dice—about 8 small
24 eggs
1 block of cream cheese
Trader Joe’s salsa verde
tortillas—the larger burrito size
cheddar cheese
parsley
salt and pepper to taste
Cook the sausage breaking into small pieces. Remove from pan. Cook onion till soft then add red pepper and garlic. When finished remove from pan. Cook potato just to crisp then add to sausage, onion and peppers. Mix eggs, cream cheese and salt and pepper. Cook eggs until dry. You don’t want a wet egg or else it will make your burrito soggy.
Mix scrambled eggs and sausage potato mixture a handful of cheddar cheese and a cup of salsa verde. Mix well.
Lay a burrito on a piece of foil. Lay a bit of cheddar cheese down as a barrier on the burrito. Place egg mixture on top of cheese. Fold in the sides and then fold up the bottom. Continue to roll and fold like a burrito. Then wrap in foil.
Quiche would be nice, too.

I took my friend lasagna, and my favorite was a spinach pasta dish that someone brought. It was so good!

My go to is homemade mac & cheese (google Alton Brown mac & cheese) or the white bean and chicken enchiladas by Skinny Taste (search Skinny Taste bean chicken enchiladas). They aren't very spicy at all!

Thanks everyone for the ideas! I'm scheduled to take her dinner so thinking it has to be a main dish and I saw @blackbird: 's suggestion for meatballs and like it! So I'm thinking Pioneer Woman's comfort meatballs and trying to decide what to make with it - salad, maybe bread, and need one more veggie side or something. Ideas??
Also really like the breakfast ideas and thinking I'll take over something for them for Saturday morning breakfast, too.

@coopsmama: I've never had those but this is my favorite meatball sauce recipe. We just serve it with rice and a salad would be nice too!
2 Tbsp. Cornstarch
1/2 C. Brown Sugar
1 Can of Pineapple Tidbits drained ( reserve syrup)
1/3 C. Vinegar
1/4 tsp. Ginger
1 Tbsp. Soy Saice

I usually make balsamic chicken with stir fried carrots and brown rice.
I had a horribly colicky baby, and everyone brought me some sort of baked pasta with red sauce and veggies. All of that gave him horrible gas since I was breastfeeding. The red sauce especially just caused a ton of issues with him, so I always try to stay away from that or any other veggie that is known to cause gas if the mom is breastfeeding.

Homemade lasagna or lasagna roll-ups with green salad and garlic bread
Or
Tater tot casserole with green salad
Or
White chicken chili with all the toppings (cilantro, onions, tomatoes, mozzerella, chips, avocado, etc) and cornbread.

This would also be mellow and tasty (just leave out the Sriracha and chili flakes) with a side of rice (if you have a Trader Joe's nearby you can even buy a box of the frozen jasmine rice!)
http://www.jocooks.com/main-courses/poultry-main-courses/crockpot-thai-chicken-thighs/
I added bamboo shoots and bell peppers to mine towards the end so that they were al dente, but you can swap out with zucchini and eggplant if your friend is avoiding peppers and onions. You can easily reduce the tomato paste down to 1-2 tablespoons and if she just eats the chicken and not much sauce, it shouldn't be that bad (and I had a reflux baby!) I also used coconut cream rather than coconut milk to get that super rich Thai restaurant sauce.

This is so easy to make and so delicious and can be taken with white or brown rice -- and it all freezes well: http://damndelicious.net/2013/07/07/korean-beef-bowl/
However, the last thing I took to a friend was lasagna with bagged salad and frozen garlic bread. With the friend previous, I brought her energy balls (a mix of oatmeal and nuts, kinda like chewy granola bars but in balls), sliced fruit and muffins.
A friend brought us turkey meatloaf, which was good. I like to bring whole meals, though, because I still had to make side dishes for the meatloaf.
