Well, I was googling "middle names for the name Naomi" and someone posted that Naomi spelled backwards is "Imoan" and it may not be great as a teenager... I'm done.

@mediagirl: lol. I don’t think that’s a great reason not to use a name.
Mostly I have had names be “ruined” because of someone who used it- family or really close friends, but also celebrities or when it just gets way too popular- like I always liked the name Anna (rhymes with can, not on). Frozen kind of ruined it though since I feel like there is a generation of little girls who would pronounce it like the movie. My older daughter was born shortly after North West and I was nervous kim k would use the C name we picked out and spell it with a K and ruin it.

@mediagirl: For what it's worth, my initials, which I use for my email address among other things, spell a dirty word when written backwards, and no one has ever noticed. I didn't even notice until adulthood!
I am a teacher and DH works with at least 6 different athletic teams a year. The number of names that were ruined for one or the other of us probably outnumber those that weren't!

Eleanor. I love Sense and Sensibility (I prefer Eleanor to the book's spelling of Elinor), and it was one of my top names. But my DH can't stand Eleanor Roosevelt, so he vetoed it.
Similarly, I like the name Elizabeth (again because of Jane Austen), but I despise Queen Elizabeth I so there's no way I could ever use it.

@CatchAFallingStar: "I moan." Or at least that's how I read it!

Michael and Alice. I love both names, but for personal reasons it would be weird to use them

There has been a couple names that I love, then when I tell my husband its something like "you know how many so and sos I've found dope on and arrested!?" So then whenever I mention it he's like "so and so the meth head, has a nice ring to it" 🙄

@Sams Mom: lol!!!
@Foodnerd81: I have an anna (pronounces Anne-ah, not like the frozen on-ah) .. only one person consistently accidentally calls her the frozen way

@mrs.kiwi: I'm an Anna, and no one has ever called me by the Frozen pronunciation.
The name that's been ruined for me is Leo. I adore it and would have loved to use it if we had a boy, but it's the name of my most loathed relative, and I just can't bring myself to do it.

@Sams Mom: hahaha
@Mrs. Carrot: yeah for me Leo = wifebeating drug dealer thug from Twin Peaks. it's so popular now though!
The bee @Sweetiepie: 's two boys are named (same spelling) the names of my only two serious ex-boyfriends before I met my husband, and the fact that her beautiful babies have those names have *completely* healed them for me

Not ruined in a bad way, but a way that I couldn't use them for a child are:
William
Zachary
Charla

I always liked the name Charlie for a girl (after my dad) but DH went to school with a girl Charli and so veto'd it.
Funny one - when DS was born, we were between the name Ethan and Kipton... my mom was there right after he was born and started calling him Kippy. Um, no mom. Ethan it is.
I also love the name Evan but can't use it b/c of a prior relationship.

I Naomi... too bad!!
Delilah is the only name that makes my skin crawl. The song a few years back was so good, but why did it have to be that name!!

Names are really only 'ruined' (crossed off the possible lists) if they are ex's, if family/close friends have used it, or if it's a super notable pop culture trend/character/celebrity for me.
Thankfully our taste doesn't really run in line with these but any time friends have had babies before us while pregnant we've been sort of anxious it would be 'our name' because we never tell before birth. So far, so good!
