We got a new pack n play with the bassinet insert for $60, so if you think the idea of the pack n play is good and you just want the baby higher up, you could just do that--way cheaper than another co sleeper and a longer lifespan.
There's no way I would want to reach down into a pack n play for MOTN feedings for the first few weeks.

We bought a Halo bassinest on kijiji, and then resold it four months later when we were done with it. Ultimately it cost is $20. It was great to have him right there, at bed level, and he transitioned from that to a crib with no problems.

@catlady: H constantly woke herself up when she kept hitting the sides of her Moses basket (we did not swaddle), so I want to use something with more space that I can keep by the bed.

@catlady: if you have the space it seems like a no-brainer to me to use it! Just means it needs to be taken apart and reassembled a few times.

We went from rock and play to pack and play (with the bassinet level thing, but not the fancy snuggly bassinet).

I had intended to have her sleep in the bassinet from our UB Vista, since it was almost never used with the stroller. Of course, LO2 hated it as much as LO1 did so it's still practically new. If you wanted to make the drive out to the burbs you could have mine for free!

I think you definitely need something raised, but the bassinet level thing in the PnP is probably fine. Mine both slept better in RnP and I just needed the sleep then and dealt with transitions later.

I have the same question--I'm also thinking of getting the Halo bassinet--it looks so nice! With lo1, we used the bassinet from our UB stroller for the first month, but didn't really have space in our room for it so transitioned to the crib after just 1 month. we have a bigger master bedroom now so i'm hoping to share room with baby longer (esp since los will be sharing a room), but I don't know that I trust the UB bassinet for longer-term sleep, since it doesn't have the mesh sides...we have a bjorn travel crib rather than standard pnp but the mattress is so low to the ground that I def don't want to use that in newborn days! we never used/had an rnp before

We got a hand me down bassinet but there are moms constantly unloading them for like $20 on my local mom FB resale group. DS2 was in my arms or in a RNP for 3 weeks, then the bassinet until 3 months, and he's been in a PNP with the Dream on Me mattress this last month.

Basically we transitioned every time his sleep went to hell., since it was garbage anyway. We moved him from the RNP to the bassinet during the 3 week growth spurt (used a tight swaddle, warm rice socks along his legs, and lined the bassinet with a dirty shirt of mine). Then we ditched the swaddling at the 6 week growth spurt slash Wonder Week 8. Then we moved him to the PNP at the point where he was moving and thrashing a lot in the bassinet (i.e. when he was gearing up to attempt rolling). Now he spins and rolls round and round in the PNP at 4 months so he's happy.

@catlady: we didn't have the snuggly insert, just the bassinet level (which is really just the mattress at a higher level) and it was totally fine.
