I just set up my new work 401k and changed my vesting from 15% to 25%. I've been doing 15% forever, so the change to 25% will be an adjustment. What percentage do you put in your 401k?

We are still low around 10% but we really need to up this!

Wow!! DH only puts in 4%, he literally just got this job though so we are trying to find our ground first before we up it.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
I put in 4% and my employer matches 4%, so 8% total. DH puts in 10%.

6%, the max to get a maximum company match. I also contribute to a Roth. (so does DH) I want to slowly increase the roth contribution to the max before increasing my 401k contribution.

0% right now.....I'm waiting until I've been at my company for 1 year, because then they will start matching! Once I hit the 1 year mark, I think I will contribute 4-5%

DH puts in 10% to his 401K. I have a Roth IRA, but I only put $4 - 5K in there every other year or so.

15% however I'm 39. My company gives us 7.5% of our salary as a match once a year. The younger you can start the better. I may have to temporarily stop mine while on Maternity Leave, so most of my leave will be unpaid or on 60% disability insurance for 6 weeks.

Wow... I only put in 4%. And with the payroll taxes increasing now, and daycare costs in three months, I can't see upping it anytime soon
pomegranate / 3809 posts
16% so that including the employer match, I put the max allowed. DH does the same. We also contribute the max to our Roth IRAs.
nectarine / 2019 posts
We contribute the IRS maximum. It just recently changed to $17,500. So that's what we put in.

I used to max it out but quit contributing when I was on maternity leave and haven't re-upped yet - I took a 25% paycut to go part time so wanted to see how things shook out first. Meanwhile, my firm contributes a flat 3% regardless of whether you contribute.

I contribute 6% and my company matches 5%, so 11% total. My husband is about the same. We also plan to buy investment property for retirement, so we are savings for that as well.

My DH puts in 11%. His company matches 4% (I think).
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
I put 20% into my 401k and $5000/yr into my IRA. My husband does the same. His company used to match up to 4% and would put 10% of their salaries in each year but they had to cut back and quit matching anything this year.

I currently contribute 12% per paycheck, I get paid bi-monthly. My combine does a discretionary matching once a year in March. I used to deposit around 18%, but due to changes in finances, I've reduced the contribution amount. Hoping to up it again soon though!

I think mine is 6% matched, and my DH's is 4% matched. We need to up it, but it won't happen until LO is out of daycare.

We contribute 10% to my husband's 401k with no company matching. We meet with our financial advisor in 2 weeks to set up a Roth and reassess our contributions.
ETA: we also pay into railroad retirement so we'll have that since we don't get social security.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
6% what the company will match, or at least use to match
pomegranate / 3414 posts
I'm required to put 10% because I don't contribute to social security, my employee puts 13% additional in.
coconut / 8472 posts
I put 10%, DH puts 18%. I'm thinking of upping my contribution amount when I get a new job; I want to make sure we're both contributing the max.
pomegranate / 3225 posts
wow, good for you! Have you considered opening a roth IRA? There are limits to how much you can contribute, but you can invest in any stock you want.
I only put in what they match, which is a measly 3% at this moment.
apricot / 461 posts
Currently 4% into the 401k with a matching 2% from my employer (that is their max match). Then I put another 6% into the Roth 403b. I will keep increasing this until I reach the max allowed (which will be about 16% for me- I'm at 12% now). We also have a 5.5% pension at my job.
My hubby has 2 pensions and a dollar-for-dollar matched 401k, but I don't have a clue what he contributes to it.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
I put in 10%, my company matches 6%. DH puts in 10%, his company matches 8%. I also have an IRA, and DH gets a pension.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
My work puts in 22% of my pretax salary and I contribute 3% and mister jacks contributes to his. My work gives us so much that we use both a 401k and a 403b.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
I put in 9% and my job matches that dollar for dollar so a total f 18% goes in. DH puts in 20% and he also a pension. We are about to reduce his 20% though temporarily as we are buying a place.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
I upped it this year to 10%. I was at 4%. I also participate in my company's ESPP.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
15% match at 6%... dh does 15% his company matches at 4%
