I usually do front carry facing in. I've occasionally done facing out.
I've tried the hip carry and back carry once so far and I found it complicated to get him there. Maybe I just need to practice it more.

either front carry facing in or back carry. He's tall enough to see over my shoulder for back carry so he likes it more now.

@Mrs. Pen: i tried the back carry this morning for the first time and i found it so nerve wracking to get him on my back! I was so paranoid about dropping him that DH had to help me get him on and off. Does this position get easier with practice?

@PurpleUnicorn: it gets less scary! I promise. Just practice over a bed or couch (or with a spottwr) until you're more comfortable.

@PurpleUnicorn: yeah I started practicing when he was 6 months. It's a little tricky with a toddler too but I pretty much have the hang of it now. I watched A LOT of youtube videos to make sure I was doing it right. Paxbaby has a lot of great tutorials.
What I do is secure the beco around my waist and then leave the rest hanging straight down. Make sure ALL the buckles are unbuckled or it won't work. Grab baby/toddler under armpits with your hands criss cross ed and backwards and do a lift and flip onto your back. It sounds complicated but it's not. Then slightly hunch/bend over so that your baby is pretty much laying on your back. Hold one arm over baby's back to make sure they stay and simultaneously. pull the beco up to their back, then switch to holding their back with the beco. bring one arm strap over at a time and hold while bringing the other over so that you can hold them both before buckling into place. I like to criss cross in the front but you don't have to. I know it sounds complicated but it's not! Also I practiced over the bed until I felt more comfortable! Now I can do it in public, parking lot etc.

@Navy_Mommy: do you have the gemini? do you think back carry is easier/harder with a wrap or gemini? you use woven wraps all the time - is that what they're called? i really think it is time for me to master the back carry.

@Mrs. Pen: thanks so much for that description! It sounds so different from what i did when i followed the Beco manual. i will definitely try it like this. And look for video tutorials - good call!

@PurpleUnicorn: oh really?! I never looked to the manual for a tutorial haha. Does it sound easier? I'm curious to know how you tried it.
ETA: I forget, how old is your LO?

@Mrs. Pen: I was just gonna recommend PaxBaby videos, lol.
@PurpleUnicorn: I don't have a Gemini, I have a Butterfly. I would never (personally) wear my baby facing out, so a Butterfly was abetter fit for us. This is a video PaxBaby has on how to do the different carries with the Gemini -

@PurpleUnicorn: DH wore it a lot more than I did, honestly. I prefer my wraps and my mei tais. The only time I wore it, really, was if I was working out in it (I would do lunge workouts with him on my back) or if I was walking home from soccer practice with him because I didn't want to sweat all over my pretty wraps, lol.

@Mrs. Pen: i had to do up the buckles FIRST (the side ones), put L on me in the front and move him to back along with the carrier and while putting my arms through the straps/hoops. i didn't feel safe doing it so i will definitely look at these videos. I'm just not home now, so i will report back later how it went.
ETA: L is about 7.5 months now
@Navy_Mommy: i don't think they even make/sell the butterfly anymore so i didn't have much choice. thanks for the video link! What do you think about back carry with wraps versus beco?
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Navy_Mommy: I love that video! I remember watching it a long while ago.
which wraps do you have? I want one so badly!

@Navy_Mommy: k, just saw your reply now about the wraps vs beco!

@Navy_Mommy: ya, i was hesitant to get the soleil because it was so new and couldn't find reviews, plus everyone on here seemed to love the gemini.

@Mrs. Pen: current stash... Nati wool gears, ice dyed C&C biotiful (dyed by me), Kokadi Nixe, Kokadi Erna in Wonderland that I over dyed turquoise (it was pink and blue, I dyed it to make it purple and blue), Kokadi Ahoi, Girasol vice versa diamond weave cream weft, Didymos Nepomuk.

@Navy_Mommy: wow! amazing collection! do you have a favorite?
@PurpleUnicorn: oooh yeah I've seen/tried that and totally didn't feel safe either!

@Mrs. Pen: then we have a custom wrap conversion half buckle made with girasol graphite diamond weave, and one made with Kokadi desert elephants.

@Navy_Mommy: hhahaha. well what would you recommend to someone who is just starting wraps?

@Mrs. Pen: which video did you use to learn how to back carry? I have an ergo but I can't get him on my back unless we start on the couch - not all that effective when i'm trying to back carry him when we're out and about!
nectarine / 2458 posts
@Mrs. Pen: honestly - pick a budget and find a size 6 wrap (you should be able to do a variety of carries with a size 6) that you think is pretty within that budget.
If you are on facebook search for The Babywearing Swap and you can find used carriers there (they retain their value if you need to buy and sell). I like all cotton or cotton linen wraps, personally. Wool is nice for winter but requires special care. I'm afraid of silk, lol. And hemp is good for heavy babies, but it's a beast to break in and I've never used bamboo.

For infant we did front carry all the time (in an out facing). Now as a 2 year old, all I do is back carry. Now he helps me get on and off my back. Just like a piggy back ride.

@PurpleUnicorn: When I wore my Beco Gemini I always wore her front carry facing in. I tried back carry and hip carry but wasn't really a fan of them in the Beco. I stopped wearing my Beco though because the seat is not wide enough and LOs legs always hit mine, it stopped being comfortable.
