My walls next to my fireplace (with tv mounted above) are completely bare--I need some ideas on what to do with the space! I feel like anything I hang will be too busy with the tv next to it but it looks unfinished without anything there too. I'll be hanging family photos somewhere in the house soon but they need their own space, not next to a tv, right?

What about some small shelves with some family pictures, vases, interesting things, etc.

I don't see anything wrong with family pictures next to the tv! I like the idea of doing a small, simple, clean-lined gallery on both sides. I would put the family pictures in the gallery though instead of trying to find art.

I had the same problem and we recently got these shelves. They are a mess right now because we are doing some renovations but I really like them. Our wall looked like yours before.

I'd do a set of pictures like @KelLeeLeee posted, but use your kids hand and foot prints for each of the pictures using darker taupe or gray paint for the prints would look nice since you wouldn't want anything too distracting by the tv.
