@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: we have an iPad mini and it has been nice to have but definitely not a need. I use it to watch streaming stuff from amazon prime( usually while doing other things), face time with LOs grandparents out of town, recipe referencing while cooking. I would probably use it as a e reader if I had time to read. LO doesn't use it on her own but would love it. I like the size and the convenience. It was a gift from my parents so I don't know how much they cost-- sorry!

@Rocker2014: Thanks hon, that's exactly the kinda thing I wanted to hear.
Since I don't have a job yet, no worries for me. It'd just be for play.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: Do you have an Amazon Prime subscription? We have the Kindle Fire HDX (7") and the integration with Prime is great. It is a little annoying that some apps available on Android aren't available in the Amazon App store, but I generally don't notice that because of what we use the Kindle for (surfing, reading, watching Prime).

@sunny: We do have Prime, which is why I'm leaning towards it
My online library also lets me choose between an e-Pub version of a book or a Kindle version of a book so I know I won't have any trouble there. And I'm assuming they let you do Gmail?

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: the separate profile thing would be nice, but between parental controls and turning off wifi, LO plays with my iPad without being able to do any damage.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Believe me, I'm an Apple gal through and through but price is a bit prohibitive at this point. And I don't really get the point of mini iPads. If I get an iPad, I want a frickin' iPad, you know?

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: totally understand but I gotta say I love the mini! I thought I'd feel the same but it's a much easier size to hold with all the functionally of the bigger ones. And lighter, and more manageable for LO. DH has iPad Air and even that feels huge now.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: sorry
Also, I had a Fire when they first came out and hated it. But I'm assuming they've worked the bugs out since then.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: I hear you on the price point. That was a big reason we went with the Kindle vs. the iPad/iPad mini. I think if cost were not in the equation, I would probably go for the iPad since I do think the fit & finish of Apple products is great. But since cost was a big consideration, we went with the Kindle. We paid only ~$160 incl taxes for the 16GB w/special offers which is a steal. The iPad mini starts at $299+tax for the prev generation (though there have been some recent deals making it much cheaper) and the display isn't as great as the HDX.
