LO, 7 mo, had a 103.5F fever last night. Her other symptoms are a runny nose & cough. I gave Tylenol but didn't call the doctor. Last time I called at 102F and they said it wasn't a big deal until 106F.
When do you call?

Wow I thought 106 was dangerous? We haven't had a high fever yet but I would call at 103.

I would call for anything over 101 . . . over 102 means a trip to the Ped!

103-104 seems too high for me. If tylenol/advil wasnt working I would be bringing her in.

We haven't had a fever yet at almost a year, but I would call at anything over 103.

Generally over 104 not coming down with Tylenol (two doses) or for more than a few days.
We follow this:

I've only taken the kiddos to the doctor twice (both G) for illness.

106? I'd have him in the ER at 106!
104 automatically, 103 if not brought done after 24 hrs with Tylenol, 102 if 48 hrs no change. And I call if he's really lethargic with any fever over 101.

Fevers don't prompt calls from me. Duration of fever might make me call, but not how high a fever is since it has limited relationship with clinical outcome.

If it's 103+ and she's visibly in pain/upset/unusually lethargic and the fever is not responding to medication

Thanks ladies. I emailed the doctor to let her know that LO had a fever (+ runny nose & cough) because she did have a skin reaction to egg yolk on Saturday. I don't think the fever is related to that but I figure it's better to let the doctor make that call.

@Mrs. Jacks: I almost voted never b/c well I haven't up to this point, but figured 104-105 would be more accurate since there would be cases that I would with that temp. lol
@Corduroy: Hope your lo gets to feeling better!

@Mrs. Jacks: agreed!
Duration of fever is more important to me than temp. Generally I'm fine with a fever since it's the body's natural way to staving off the bad guys - it means the immune system is working. If it was over 104 I would call the triage nurse. If it was 101+ for more than 4-5 days I would likely call.
The only time he's had a fever was when he had roseola. He had a fever of 103 for 5 days, then had a rash for two days. The nurse didn't even have him come in because she said it would run it's course and there was nothing they could do.
I would likely take into account other symptoms as well.

I kinda freak out when it comes to fevers so if it was over 104, I'd call. Or if the fever persisted for more than 24 hours, I'd call. But I've been told that fevers (alone) don't necessarily warrant a doc call but I do it for peace of mind, even if she tells me that obvious (get her Tylenol and monitor).
